bought an item and its not really as described
May 20, 2012 02:39 PM

Hi, help please with advice. I bought a dress on here. When I received it, it stank like mothballs. It also is a darker colour than the what it looks like in the picture. It says above knee in description but its really knee length. Im really disappointed I have to say. Im new to ebay and I feel i bought off a feral seller. I gave positive feedback but now i wish i didnt. I didnt realise what my rights were at the time. I wasnt going to open a dispute but the more i think about it, the more ticked off i get. What should I do? What would you do?

For starters every PC monitor may show the same color with a bit of variation so that is not the fault of the seller.

The smell of mothballs wjile is horrid will leave the fabric when washed and spray with febreeze then leave to air out for a bit.

Did the seller have any measurments in the listing at all re the length of the dress?

You can contact the seller and let them know how you feel and if you paid with paypal you can open a dispute but it will cost you to return it if you want the refund.

We have 3 computers here and when I look at the same item on the 3 different monitors, the colour will look different on every one.  When buying on line you have to be prepared for some variation in colour from what you see on your monitor.  The seller has no control over that.

If the dress is above the knee or to the knee really depends on your height; it is a good idea for sellers to include measurements in their listings, such as length and across the bust.  If they do not, you should ask before you bid.  Fortunately, if it is smidgen too long, it can always be taken up.

As far as the smell goes, it just needs to be aired out, or if washable washed.  Mothball smell does not last long, if you hang the dress on clothes line on nice day.

If you are not happy you should contact the seller, they may give you refund, but you will have to return the dress to them at your expense, but I do not think there is enough for claiming the dress is "significantly not as described"

If the dress was listed as 'new' then it really shouldn't have smelled like mothballs - but if it was 'pre-owned' you have no way of knowing how it had been stored.

The colour may well have been slightly different to the one in the listing since not all monitors display colours exactly the same way. If it had been listed as 'black' and you received 'red' then you'd have cause to complain.

It may well have been 'above knee' on the seller - maybe she is taller than you. That's not a very sensible way of describing the length of a dress - exact measurements would have been better.

This doesn't necessarily mean you bought from a 'feral seller' - it just sounds like she is not very experienced and her listings aren't as accurate as they could be. Maybe you could get it drycleaned to get rid of the mothball smell?

If you were concerned about the length, it would be best to ask measurements prior to bidding.

There's no way you would win a dispute, after all, what is knee length on a tall person, could be ankle length on a short person, or knee length on a short person would be a mini on a tall person.

Calling the seller "feral" is a bit over the top, I'd rather receive an item smelling of moth balls than cats, dogs or cigarette smoke. Storing in moth balls show the seller looks after their items.

Goodness me,  I have never been called any of those names, nor anything vaguely close to a deflamatory name, but if it did occur I would seriously rethink what I was doing wrong.

As for the drugs and alcohol, maybe that is the cause rather than the cure. :O
