A LAWSUIT by One Nation Party co-founder David Ettridge against federal Opposition Leader Tony Abbott will head to court next month.
Mr Ettridge is suing federal Opposition Leader Tony Abbott for damages of more than $1.5 million.
He has accused Mr Abbott of acting unlawfully in 1998 by assisting and encouraging litigation against One Nation in the Queensland courts.
Mr Ettridge alleges the court action was false and malicious and the resulting damage affected him greatly.
He also accuses Mr Abbott of attempting to pervert the course of justice by providing lawyers "to propel those false claims through the courts".
Mr Ettridge's lawyers served legal papers on Mr Abbott for damages on the weekend.
A spokesman for Mr Abbott told AAP the papers had been received, but declined to comment further.
A directions hearing is set for the Brisbane Supreme Court on May 9 and Mr Abbott has received a summons to attend.
"Before Tony Abbott can become prime minister of Australia he needs to be judged on his suitability to hold the highest office in Australia," Mr Ettridge told AAP in a statement.
"For his role in this disgraceful period of Australian political history, Tony Abbott has never been brought to account."

Why not sue the guy that made the accusations????
Tony Abbott did not make those accusations so why should he be the one sued?

Hi Az this from Independent Australia
The complaints made by Abbott destroyed One Nation, which at one stage looked set to challenge the Liberals as Australia’s dominant conservative political force.
Mr Ettridge says he has been spurred into action because he has great concerns that such an unprincipled person as Tony Abbott could, potentially, become Australia’s next political leader.
“I am greatly concerned that … Tony Abbott, a man who had such little regard for the law and the democratic rights of Australians [in 1998] , could become Australia’s next Prime Minister,” said Mr Ettridge, yesterday, in a statement.
It amazes me that more official action doesn't appear to have happened...especially as he was at the time a sworn MP

Correct, 15 years down the track he had a thought bubble and with the help of his backers and their private agenda a court case is pending.
Smells of a desperate Labor party behind this to me
But it will give the luvies something to cluck about 🙂

Hey Nero, also sound like a bit or "sour grapes" does this man realise that any costs for the court action will most likely be picked up by the tax payers which shows he has little regard for the people of Australia. I think he should "build a bridge and get over it"
If he has been harbouring this grudge for 15 years and only NOW decided to do something it would be because "someone" has whispered in his ear, does not sound as if he would have the intestinal fortitude to do it on his own like most weaklings who need a gang to back them up.

being gaoled is no small matter. abbott has queations to answer, he needs to stand down until he's cleared or convicted. he ought to sit with thomson on the crossbenches for now and do the right thing .

Maybe he could take JG with him and she could stand aside until she proves she was not a member of the communist party, did not tell porkies about the carbon tax, was not involved in something shady when she worked for Slater and Gordon (later sacked).
