We sold an item and six days after the sale we receive a brief note telling us his child bid and the item is not wanted.

        How do we cancel the sale and not upset my seller status with eBay?

        Don't really want to register an unpaid item, he has let me know and he might be genuine.

To the right of item in the sold list select cancel and choose buyer changed mind.

You get your fee back and no defect.

BTW, it's the oldest excuse in the book.

Even if genuine, an account holder is responsible for their account and shouldn't give out their password.
