Why not just get ebay to collect it off the sale of anything sold here in Australia?
ie: you sell items in Australia, you pay Australian taxes - level playing field

It might do away with the administration fees at this end but do you really think an overseas business is going to be out of pocket to comply with laws in another country??
No way!!!! They will whack a bl**dy great handling fee on the transaction to compensate themselves.....probably way more than we pay in fees here anyway.
As you say, all it will do is stop many businesses from selling to Australia/Australians anyway. Then everyone will miss out....the overseas business will lose sales, the buyer will not get what they want and the ATO will not get any GST.

at the end of the day everybody who buys from here or buys from overseas pays 10 % gst very simple
thats fair for everybody, it will make things brought from overseas 10% dearer , which will make the price more promosing to buy from an australian seller as they already pay gst from importing or buying from a wholesaler,, it will bring australian sellers 10 % closer .and for small sellers it will make no diference as a buyer will pay 10% more from an australian seller or a chinese seller.
now how its going to be colected thats another story , but until we know ,we cant say a thing as we dont know.
at the end of the day most australian sellers online or from a shop would be better off as there prices will be 10 % cheaper than overseas , as most sellers pay gst already .

Mate you are forgetting about all the Admin fees on top of the 10% GST to be paid, a lot of overseas buisnesses will refuse to collect the GST on behalf of the Australain Govt simple as that and it will be harder to get stock at all. I am in a wheelchair and on only part benifits as I work from home with my buisnesses, but this will more than likely shut me down and I will have to go on to full benifits as I cannot compete with more. I am sure there will be lots more like me out there in the same boat, does the govt or hardly normal care, I think not..........

Agreed, that's the worst idea I've heard so far.

Joe for crying out loud. Most sellers on here would not already pay GST on stock purchases. Most are small mum and dads businesses either making a small amount to supplement a spouses wage, someone who can't work a normal job for various reasons (read above). Most don't get any assistance at the moment from our government becuase we have carved out little businesses for ourselves to stay out of the welfare lines. We don't earn enough to register for the GST or collect it. We stay under the 1000 threshold as a part of that.
I don't know how you think most businesses are already regisitered for GST. Reducing that threshold as others have said will make those little businesses just shut up as it all becomes to hard, guess where those people end up Joe?

Yes Joe,we all end up on full time welfare and I don't want that but I will be forced to now as i cannot work a normal job becuase of my disability and chronic pain...................

"Most sellers on here would not already pay GST on stock purchases."
Only if they are importing from overseas under $1000 dollars otherwise they are paying GST but are unable to claim it against Collected GST, because thay are not registered.
In 2012 there were 1,475,400 small businesses (T/O < $2m) of these 597,930 had T/O <$ 50,000 and were therefore no required to register for GST although many may have registered.
