Car Boot Sales
Feb 1, 2012 11:21 PM

Okay, so I've decided to go to my first ever car boot sale (as a seller, although have only been one or two times even as a buyer).

What sort of items seem to be most popular?  I have pretty much everything here (trying to condense a ginormous home into a teeny weeny tiny cottage), so have a huge range of stuff to choose from.

If anyone can give me a head's up on what type of things sell the best, I would be grateful, save me loading up the car only to bring it all back home again.

I go to the car boot sales every Sunday.

Always find the stalls with toys and cheap books are very popular

I take books, paper ephemera and smaller items with a 5 tub limit

I have three plastic leaf folders that I use for pics and prices of the bigger stuff and a lot of the smaller stuff....  whether it is at home or already on display.

Business cards or some printed contact details ( I use mobile and GENERAL area description rather than exact address for security reasons as I do not have a business address) displayed near the stock folders usually dissappear quickly.

This gives you the chance of selling stuff that you left at home

I would like to suggest you bring lots of change..

Best to have enough to change lots of $20's, several $50's and even a $100 note.

Lots of gold coins too. and silver if you are going to have item's in that cheap catergory.

I would take books, and since you need to make room in your smaller house also other larger size items to get rid of.

Also makes it  harder for people to steal and eaiser keep an eye on them.

Smaller items which you aint going to make much money on and take forever setting up and getting covered in dust sitting there on the table.

Perhaps put them in tubs for people to sift thru and have a look, if you are happy just to get rid of it cheaply as people like to get a bargain.

Get a bumbag so you can serve n keep an eye on things also maybe a container kept handy for coins so you can just easily grab some change from there quickly if needed for small sales.

Say a greeting to people and have a chat when they come over as then they know you aware of them and less likely to pinch stuff and more like to buy something.

Are you working by yourself or will have a helper?

Easier with two people if you need to go to toilet etc.

Thank you everyone for your advice, it is greatly appreciated.

People stealing stuff had never even crossed my mind ! :O

The idea of the folder with pics of the large stuff and "business" cards is excellent, thank you.

Well, i would say that of the 3 different car boot sales i go to each week, probably 70% of stall holders dont acknowledge people looking at their stuff.

Its also really annoying when they dont have proces on everything.

I often get supermarket checkout people asking me for my rewards card immediately after they've just scanned it - understandable as you would repeat that question a zillion times a day - wouldn't surprise me if a lot of checkout people mumble it in their sleep :^O

Would brand new pet items (ie., dog toys, bowls, etc) be a go at a carboot sale?  I have closed down my (online) petstore and have a heap of stock I want to clear. I'm getting rid of it at close to cost price, so it would be much cheaper than any petstore.

YES YES YES

and even put up a notice on a local shopping centre notice board to say you will be there..

I can't believe how much people spend on their pets when they go to markets and such...

Yes, lots of people with pets buy stuff from markets for there pets so no reason people going to a car boot sale wont buy pet items that are cheap, you will probly sell a bit of that stuff ;)

Yes it is quite strange how ALOT of stall holders say nothing to you like you are a ghost  :O

Just stare at you instead.... I am usually the one to say how yah goin mate, lol

Cool, sounds like I should be able to shift a lot of my left over pet gear at the market then.

Assassin, sorry, I never did doggy clothes as it would have been too much of a nightmare trying to keep all sizes in stock and then trying to field questions about whether or not it would fit the customer's dog.

I concentrated on cat and dog items like toys, beds, training items.

Collectables and vintage items is what I always look for and there are always dealers sniffing around at such places - Don't make items too expensive and don't sell anything valuable for next to nix!!.......research anything you are not sure of!!

I've done about 6 car boot sales. People love good clean practical household items and appliances.  When people come to your stall get up and greet them and be friendly and happy.  If you seem like a great person people will warm to you and BUY stuff.  Don't forget to actually "sell" your items. There are lots of sellers at car boot sales and people will move on quickly if you appear uninterested. Constantly remerchandise your stall and move stock around because buyers often go around twice and will see things they missed previously. Good luck and don't overprice - people are there for bargains!!!

Re: Car Boot Sales

Okay, so I'm seriously contemplating doing my first car boot sale this weekend.  Have been spending the last few days trying to get everything sorted out.

My only concern is that I will have to do it by myself, as my husband is currently away working. Has anyone "manned" a car boot sale by themselves and is it too hard (what happens when you need to pee ?:| :^O

Also, what sort of takings could I expect from a car boot sale? I realise this is a bit like asking how long is a piece of string, but would anyone like to share their best/worst takings for the morning?  I'm trying to figure out if it's worth trying to tackle it on my own (I will drag myself there if it sounds like the $$ may be worthwhile), or if I should wait until hubby's back home to help.

Lastly, do they let you take a trailer? I only have a sedan and have a lot of stuff to sell - can't see it all fitting in the car.
