Wrecking / Parts + Choice Listings = breaching listing policy

Wrecking / Parts + Choice Listings = breaching listing policy
Aug 5, 2012 12:02 PM

I've noticed that quite a few sellers are doing a listing for "Car Parts" or "Wrecking" at (say) $1, then offering a choice of products within the listing description. Also, they are adding comments like "anything else, just ask me" as well.

They aren't Classifieds, they are Buy It Now (probably using the 30 free listings). When ever I've tried that kind of trick in my own listings (in other categories) I've been slapped with policy violations for avoiding eBay fees, etc.

Yet it's really common in Motors, which I find odd. I've got a couple of cars to part out, and having a single "wrecking" ad like that would save me heaps of time and effort making listings for each component.

So what's the story? Are people not reporting them, or is it just an easy way to list where you can get away with breaking the rules? Do you guys bother to report them? Or what? :)

I buy fleece in the Spinning/Weaving section and I am seeing  more and more sellers offering "1" fleece but fail to state the weight of the fleece then when you read the listing they have numerous fleeces of differing weight, colour and micron.

I avoid these sellers like the plague because I want to know exactly what I am buying as I have a price per kilo in my mind.

All different factors go into working out the price I am prepared to pay for any given fleece.

These listings don't seem to get reported and I would love to do similar but it would be a given that I would get reported.

My listing would be along the lines of

"bric-a-brac for sale, 1 item" starting at 99c.

I would then list every item in my unit that I want to get rid of because it would make it so easy!:^O

Yep they annoy me. Definitely circumventing ebay fees, yet the listings stay when reported.

I'm currently in the process of stripping a wreck, and will be listing each item individually, as per ebay policy.

Don't use your indicators. It will spoil the surprise.

They do not worry me.  I actively seek them sometimes

If a seller has a few parts listed for a car and I am looking for a part from the same model car that they have not listed then I will email and ask them for availability and price.

On one of my other accounts I include a pic of the car whole while only selling a small part of the trim.......

I find there is no need to breach ebay listing policy by offering other parts within that listing or offering sales outside of ebay...........

Inquisitive prospective buyers will email and ask anyway.

If a buyer emails and aks me for an alternator for a vehicle when I only have a throttle body, a  tail light and a keyed set listed and no offer of other parts within that listing and I have an alternator then I will sell it to them (probably off ebay) with a clear conscience.

If I advertise a vehicle for sale whole on ebay with plenty of pics .......and one pic includes......

a motorcycle, a boat and a goat in the background................and somebody emails me and says

"Gday bloke..... cute goat.....how much ??????

I WILL SELL IT TO THEM on ebay..... off ebay.....

 whatever tickles the buyers fancy..................

advertising is just that....advertising

My take on it is that ebays base/core value to me is for advertising (ie that is what I pay for) and my base value to ebay is one of profit through that advertising.

If advertising on ebay guaranteed sales then my position would be different however advertising does not even guarantee that people will look.

Thanks Viewmont, and (personally) I agree with all of that. I am not sure that eBay agrees, however...

My concern is that I already have an email folder here full of policy breaches when I have tried these kinds of types of things in my listings. I've got a few from Car Parts listings, but mainly from other categories.

I've even got one where I got a breach because I mentioned that I was selling another similar item, and included a link to an eBay Search (of my own listings). But the other listing had subsequently sold, and hence it was no longer available and didn't appear in the search :_|

The listings that triggered me asking the question were ones like: EB Popular Parts For Sale, CHEAP!!

Take a look at that guy's stuff - there are a number of issues in that listing (and his others) - search engine manipulation, choice listings, etc. In any other category, it'd be instant death to list like that!

But if they are generally getting away with it and policy breach reports get ignored, then I'm thinking why noty list the same way? It would save me a HEAP of time and effort!

But I don't want to risk a suspension, especially not on a Selling ID that I care about. I worry about slipping down in search results if I have policy compliance issues too! Hence why I wanted to ask for opinions of people with more "ebay motors experience" :-D

I understand Coops, the wording is important so that you do not breach policy..... I find people ( well me anyways) do not search for "popular" or " most parts available" in the parts category although they read well if they were a  newspaper ad ( in fact i have never fitted a popular or worn one out in my 40 odd years of mechanicing).

I search for an alternator, a speedo, a rear 1/4 window,  or an inner control arm bush.

If you advertise a single part in the heading and a single part in the description (remembering of course that mirrors are attached to doors and alternators to engines and brackets... (or insert here one keyword part that is attached to another keyword part) and make no offer of "other parts available" but instead make a (big) "list" of the type of parts "YOU HAVE SOLD" and the makes you have dealt with "previously" on ebay as a "buyer guide."  (wink wink nudge nudge) and the suggestion after the list "so put me on your favourite sellers list"

Then although you are only advertising an eb window winder ....a buyer search that includes description will bring inquisitive buyers looking for many varied EB parts.

Use the word "wrecking" in one of your "community announcements" ie. "I am committed to wrecking out and recycling quality parts that will save you money" and buyer searches that include description will bring many many enquiries.

I find that listing titles that are well within the policy guidelines with relevant keywords hidden in an ebay legal speel within the description yields the best results for minimal risk.

A buyer that wants a part that they cannnot find elsewhere or one that is priced keenly generally provides a good partner to trade with.

EB popular parts I don't think that seller is setting the world on fire with his sales coops. I guess he could have had a zillion off site sales...but I doubt it I notice he has varied from choice style listings and $1 starts with the Nissan Pulsar Q N15 Series 2 Bucket Seats @$65 and a cupla others..... I think that is because the many choice listings he has on his page are not working because they are poorly keyworded/titled/described.

regarding policy breaches in the motors section.....I find that search ranking is not as important in the motors section if you are selling second hand selected parts

......... If I was selling new blue doodads and so were a zillion other sellers then search ranking and success are synonymous...

but not so much with more unique items or items that can be priced easily to meet or better the market price given the minimal inward costs.

GDAY richo :^OB-)...it's the quick and the dead around here....

It went yesterday to a lonely local kiwi (the sheep are pretty rather thin on the ground here) The kiwi was surprised how well the BOTH OF THEM could wear only one pair of gumboots... so  it was well trained I dunno about house trained.... it used to leave funny marks on the curtains in the bedroom and to date I have not been able to remove the stains. :|

So for an alternator off a 3.9 litre automatic EB ford four door sedan I would title list something like "alternator EB 3.9 engine automatic bracket Bosch internal regulator Ford four (4) door" and offer the bracket with the alternator so that the actual title keywords blend with the other part keywords in your customer announcement/ product scope statement...... oooh a "product scope statement"

......I just made up a new piece of ebay boolcheet
