How to take background off from listing pictures with FhotoFiltre
Mar 11, 2012 08:00 PM

I was asked about how to take back ground off from listing pictures by a seller this morning. I decided to post a thread rather than doing this as a private message. It might help other sellers who don’t know how.

I use PhotoFiltre. It’s free to download.

Step one:  Open PhotoFiltre and drop a picture in. Then click “fill” icon.

The last one is the clone stamp tool.

This is really handy if you've taken a good photo of something but it's marred by a small flaw in the photo. Basically, you select an area of a photo and copy it, then use the brush to paint over the flaw, and instead of a colour from the pallette (which is very noticable), the tool paints with the photo image so that it blends in and looks natural.

Here's a shot I just took of a black dress that's got a hair and a little bit of fluff on it.

Here it is after I use the clone stamp.

This works best on solid colours or densely repeating backgrounds (like grass, the sky, water etc - you can remove objects entirely by painting over them with the same background).

Here's a shot with a small object I want to remove.

This is the same shot after using the clone stamp.

It generally won't work well on patterned objects etc as it will just look like a clumsy cut & paste job.

This is SO helpful Digital,

LOL, too many times to count of photos with a little bit of my FOOT showing, when taking shots of garments lying flat.

Whilst I have an incredibly gorgeous foot that is particularly dazzling after a pedicure, I much prefer to catch a buyers attention with the item being sold.

I will give this a go when I get my head around the basics.

And thats thank you from me too.

l use Corel Photo paint 7 and have always avoided the fill tool, mainly because it hates me.

Just had a fiddle then, following your instructions, changed from 'Normal' to 'HBS' and bingo! Works perfectly.

Sometimes l get a great photo of the horses but the background is rubbish. Hitting the fill tool usually covered the horse as well as the background in one click. Was just a wrong setting.

Yeehah.

Thank you digital ghost for the tips :)

I didn't know that. I didn't need to do it before. But now I know. So I can try when I have a chance.

May I ask a question please. I have downloaded the program photofiltre, and what I have is this photo of my dog which I have whited out the background.

How can I get just the image of the dog, without the white background please? Cropping does not do a good enough job.

You need to make the background transparent.

The easiest way to do that is to make the background a solid colour that doesn't appear in the picture. (In the case of the picture of the dog, I would probably go for blue).

I'll demonstrate with this pic

Then you need to select the transparent colour tool:

A pop-up window will probably appear that looks like this:

Select yes.

Then this window will appear:

The solid background colour is generally the only option you get to make transparent. The tolerance level will adjust how much of the colour blue is made transparent - a low tolerance setting and there may be faint lines around the picture, a high tolerance will sometimes remove colours in the picture, or make outlines less defined - you can preview what it looks like, and if the tolerance needs further adjusting, you can just keep going until the preview looks good.

This is what it will look like in Photo Filtre

After that, the picture needs to be saved in GIF format, or you will lose the transparency.

This is what it will look like when posted

Just thought it might be a good idea to demonstrate with a pic that actually had a background :8}

Keep in mind that the background will become the same colour etc of wherever it's posted. If you upload a picture to a listing on a template that has an orange background, that's basically what the background of your picture will be.

I use it most often for "shopping" two or more pics together (though usually for less practical reasons than eBay photos. ]:) )

It's not too bad :) Looks like about the only thing you need to do is colour in the bits the fill tool doesn't cover. If you find some of the background is still showing through, the best thing to do is use the paintbrush to fill it in. That way you've got a 100% solid colour background and the transparent tool should work pretty well perfectly after that.

bumping this thread as we are all going to have to learn how to do this next year with the new photo requirements ebay are telling us that they are introducing.

My question is do ALL photos in the listing have to have the background removed or just the gallery image ? It isn't clear in the email.

Removing the background is obviously very time consuming so having to do all photos, if you usually add say 8 photos per listing, will be a nightmare.

I for one am certainly not looking forward to having to remove the background of photos as each item I do list is individual, so can't use stock photos ........ if you sell modern items ebay will be easy.....if you sell vintage it is going to very work intensive.

I reckon it would be easier and look better to build your own lightbox then edit each photo.        You can find tutorials online and you just need a box, like a study lamp or something and white paper.         We just use a white table and the white wall behind it,  but we have proffesional gear,  however Ive watched my husband do a DIY setup for a product shoot before and it looks fine.

From my understanding, none of them have to have the background removed, it's just that having a neutral background with nothing else distracting from the item for sale is being recommended. The only new image policies I'm aware of is no text on gallery photos and images that are at least 500 x 500 pixels.

Making a light box is a good idea, and I have something like that already for my smaller items, but it's not practical (for me) for the things like full-length dresses etc -  there's only one spot in the house where I can get a really good photo, I can't hang a drop sheet there, so background removal is the best option.

Thank you for bumping this thread! It's a really good one! Something I didn't know how to do. I'm fairly new to the forums and it's been fantastic the information shared by other posters. I'm always learning something new!

Most likely using wrong keywords. my current editing program does not have this feature...and so thanks sooooooo much for posting this. A joy...I know some html and how to do odds and ends, mainly by experimenting...but not this...and yep, what a great thread...jilly going to download the program and try it out...:-x

Hi dg, I just went in & found the 'Tips of the Trade' 'Get ready for changes coming in 2013' LINK http://pics.ebaystatic.com/aw/pics/au/onsite/TipsOfTheTrade_Landing_Header.jpg

I have also printed it out -

In NEW PICTURE REQUIREMENTS - 'in 2103 requirements for pictures will be updated to ensure quality imagery on the site'.....

further down the page it shows 2 separate pics of golf bags with 'Example of a great picture that meets size requirements & guidelines'

DO use neutral backdrops to keep the focus on the item

DON'T use busy backdrops taht draw attention away from your item. verbatim.

I guess this isn't [as yet] stating that it is compulsory to use a neutral backdrop - hopefully it won't become compulsory either as the work involved will make listing a nightmare for for sellers of individual items - so I guess it could be interpreted as 'preferred, but not compulsory'........

God I hope this turns out to be the case, as I am sure many others do also as I spent all last night attempting to perfect the background erasing & found it all very confusing [then I found this thread which probably would have helped tremendously].

Thanks again dghost !

um, that should read 2013 not 2103 ...if that were the case I wouldn't be at all concerned lol

That's the way I read it -  I'm guessing they're encouraging uniformity in as many ways as possible, rather than individuality.
