Penguin Non-Fiction Book Removed , Content is Policy Violation

A book I listed that was published by Penguin Books was removed due to policy violation yet another book on Euthanasia by another author was listed and sold ..

As a bookseller , I would like to know  ?,  how I am I to know what books I can list and what books I can't list without reading every book from start to finish ? .

The notice , I received said that a book can't be listed if it provides information on how to harm people etc .but there must be a huge range of books that have details like that in the content .

I don't want to make any more errors so other booksellers might have some more details on this subject .

Try posting in the book board. A lot of bookies don't come here.

At a guess, depending on whether the title included euthanasia, another member reported it. eBay generally don't look at listings. If euthanasia WAS in the title, then it was probably picked up on that automatically.

I would expect a seller to at least know the subject of a book before they listed it. That's why publishers write blurbs.

If the book was pulled for a violation, don't list it again (been there, done that!) It matters not that 180 copies of the same book are listed by others, just means they haven't been reported or caught yet.

(l have a book selling account too). l listed a book about a period in Germany's history - not game to use the words here incase l get slapped - the book got pulled due to the image (a symbol) that was on the cover.

Floored me because l could see heaps of others listed. Rang eBay, was told what the violation was, what the result was and what would happen if l listed it again.

Learnt my lesson then, makes no sense but thems are the rules.

I can easily read what a book is about on the back of the book but a lot of it's content are not disclosed on the back of the book , a  bookseller is usually not a censor of books and if you go into any large bookstore there is usually a wide range of titles on  subject  such as murder , wars , violence , different religions etc .

Just because someone stocks or reads a book on a particular subject doesn't mean they agree with the content .

I didn't know that a book which exams euthanasia and was published by a leading publisher was not to be sold .

Just because something is not legal , I didn't know it was illegal to write about it ..

So much for freedom of speech!

patch, the freedom in this particular case is eBay's freedom to decide what can and cannot be sold on its own site.

the freedom of speech is there.. penguin published the book... but on this site eBay is the arbitrater on what is / is not allowed.

if you check ebays rules and policies.. it does state

eBay prohibits the sale of items or links to items that encourage, promote, facilitate or instruct others to engage in illegal activity

There are 287 books on euthanasia  listed on ebay at the moment written by many different authors on the subject so it appears that some books on the subject can be sold and others can not be sold so booksellers should check before they list as to what can be sold .

What a pity that eBay don't buy a few and take notice. :(
