Yes, being stupid and not being able to find anything else to "impress". Not sure why would people be impressed with anybody doing the above, and other dangerous activities. As far as competitions to eat/drink the most; well I think they are just the pits.

Why do people do it?

Because not everybody wants to hide behind a keyboard many people want get out & experience what the world has to offer, nothing is risk free , even cowering behind the keyboard you run the risk of getting a raft of problems due to lack of exercise .

Dying in your early twenties by doing some of these things as in the openeing post = a very short life. What is commendable about that?

I think people that become mountaineers and spend many years doing so, but may also have an accident and die is getting out there doing what you want... not a pie stuffing competition.

So people die every day but not everybody has truly lived, I for one do not want to look back on my life and say dam I wished I tried that

Not high on mine either but if it is on some bodies then I say go do it, but make sure your comfortable with the risks before you do it

Not many people die in their early 20's (excluding diseases and accidents) from self inflicted activities like the ones in the opening post... if they could live their life again, I doubt they would still choose do those particular things that killed them.

Correct football has the highest injury rate of all those on the list .
The list btw is of all the activities I have done at some stage in my life.
I can honestly say I am not afraid of dieing coz at least I have lived not just survived

I think all those activities listed are well worth doing compared to pie stuffing and drinking huge quantities of beer in a short space of time.

I abseiled down a cliff ONCE (nearly died of fright). I have watched bungee jumpers jumping off the bridge near Queenstown NZ... too scared to try that.

I always wanted to do a tandem parachute jump when I was younger and go in a hot air balloon (too expensive). Now I don't want to, but I am still alive at least.

Each to their own, some get what they need from knitting others from winning a pie eating comp,others from plummeting from a perfectly good plane or jumping off a perfectly good cliff or god for bid that waste of a perfectly good walk called golf

I can understand the thrill of running with the bulls. Like that grey-headed old professor said on 60 mins last night "if you can't die from it, what 's the point?" (or words to that effect)

But there's no way I'll ever understand where the glory is making yourself sick and dying in pie-eating or hot-dog or chili-eating or alcohol skulling contests.

Why do you need to understand it icy , why not just embrace it as a bit of totally irrelevant cultural diversity.

Personally I have never got the need to hit a little white ball and chase after it to just hit it again , but hay people do and people make millions out of it , what's more many a person has dropped dead on the golf course including my neighbour so there you go
