If used with subtlety it can sometimes help you to avoid slaps or even holidays, whilst still getting your message across.

Back to the OP, usually, the only people who don't appreciate sarcasm, don't 'get' it. I usually resort to sarcasm if I can't say what I really want to. I'm far more caustic and sarcastic in real life. Desirable?? My husband finds it amusing, so I can't see why not.

I got the sacasm but she really meant, "well, that was a load of bull **bleep**, can't you guys read what the OP is asking for"

It takes some intelligence to understand sarcasm. If you're offended instead of laughing, you know why.

Sarcasm can be clever and friendly, or nasty and disparaging. So is it desirable? On balance, probably not.

I think we need emoticon indicating "sarcasm", I used to leave a smilie, but often people did not get it anyway

As far as smileys go I find it just as easy to use my own. When others are using them I can't tell what the expression is.

Just click the green tree when posting and it'll take you to your own.

I even picked up one for Monman...

I think sarcasm is often used to be cruel, to put down an individual. I don't think that's desirable.

If it's used in a non-personal way, for example, about politics, or world affairs, then it can be useful and non-hurtful.
