The Gillard government oversaw the smallest increase in cost of living of any Australian government for at least 25 years despite the introduction of the carbon tax, a new study has found.

Moreover, Australian households have seen real incomes - disposable income minus cost of living increases - rise 15 per cent since just after Labor took office, giving the average household a $5324 a year boost, or $102 a week.

lol.. it might be better for those that have a mortgage or live in the city...

But

Come and live out my way for a while... see the minimum 6000 people that lost their jobs this past 12 months directly related to ALP policy decisions.

Come and talk to those business owners that still live in those mining towns that are trying not to go bankrupt after half the town have moved out and the mines have stopped spending.

Come and see the people that are retired and live on their savings and they have record low interest rates.

Come and speak to farmers that irrigate YOUR food and ask them about the $4000 quarterly electricity bill thanks to the carbon tax.

Come and speak to the locals that can't get a job because of a slow economy because people are not spending.

Sorry but I live my reality... I don't need a university in Canberra to tell me that we have never had it so good......

come and live in my shoes and then tell me that I have never had it so good.

Come and live in the shoes of my child that can't get a job without moving into a big city where he has no support and will pay higher bills that he won't be able to afford on a teenagers wage.

come and speak to someone outside of the city limits.

yes Cat and I am sure that most would also acknowledge that there are areas of Australia still recovering from natural disasters

Small businesses key to flood recovery

The final report of the Regional Australia Institute's analysis of four community's recovery was released on Wednesday.

It assessed the recovery of Emerald and Cardwell from floods and cyclones, as well as two other towns ravaged by fires several years ago.

The study showed the key part of long-term recovery was a resilient small business sector, which also helped the emotional recovery of residents.

However, it found a "lack of funding for small business recovery" reflected a lack of appreciation for the sector, particularly in small towns relying on local jobs.

It also found those towns with a more diverse economic base and better pay rates had a better recovery overall.

"The distinctions drawn between community recovery and business recovery, and the seeming lack of focus on business recovery miss the vitally important link between the two areas," the report reads.

"Community recovery will not occur without business recovery.

"In the absence of an adapted and functioning economy, a disaster impacted region will remain in a state of post-disaster dysfunction."

The study also identified the key role local councils play in disaster recovery, and the need for councils to work with the community to prepare for, and recover from disasters.

I think we're doing OK,

manufacturing in Victoria is a problem, largely due to our high dollar and cheaper manufacturing from OS (not the ALP's fault). but we still have our AAA rating

no..nor none of the natural disasters which have occured over the term of the Labor Government.

Sometimes I think people recognise the damage and the need in their areas when it suits them ...what is odd imo is doing that at the same time as making our budget such a big focus.Helping costs money and even then there will be a 'recovery time' in areas affected natural disasters.

I am outside the city limits, as are others here.

Please find some proof of the electricity accounts increasing by $4000 in the past year.

Haven't you become employed after being unemployed?

This Gov. did not create youth unemployment. It was worse when I was young. My daughters did move away for school and work. One returned and went farming.

I saw some MP (? Chris Pyne) saying something about the number of under a certain age (he included those under 17 /18) who are 'unemployed' and when questioned and told that we are keeping kids in school longer now...he said that apparently these teens told them that they were looking for full time work ...minimum school leaving age is 17 Nationally isn't it ?'

They may be on a benifit as students ...if they are being counted as unemployed youth ....that's not correct to do so is it ?

I used to be good at maths.

Obviously I'm not any more.

Since my income has risen a staggering 4% in 4 years, my rent has risen 15% in those same 4 years, my electricity has risen over 20% in those 4 years, not a single thing I purchase on a regular basis has reduced in price, and somehow that adds up to more disposable income in my pocket.

I can tell you that the problems up North are not caused by the floods....

In fact it is because of the floods that many unemployed builders and labourers are actually able to scrape up some work... if it wern't for those disasters then we would be in a much more concerning situation. The roads recovery program has also given many unskilled workers jobs...

Businesses that I know are on the verge of bankruptcy are not the ones in town but the ones in mining towns. They were not flooded... they were strangled the day after the CO2 tax and the Mining Tax were introduced.

So please don't go putting falsehoods down as facts...

Also I would like to point out that up here the unemployment rate has always been less under a Coalition government and higher under an ALP government.

I remember reading some time bacl (? last year) that businesses in some mining towns have trouble keeping staff (as the workers get more pay at the mines), that some are missing out on businesses due to workers being FIFO rather than permenant residents and cost / availability of housing in some areas as well .Locals who don't work at the mines in some areas ....can not afford to live there.Is that the case in some areas ? Did it used to be that there used to be some sort of an agreement that mine owners helped/contributed in some way to keep the towns alive .

Cats Back, farmers here (in Victoria) may have been emplying fencing contractors ...after floods and fires ...they lost their businesses which take time to build up though ....so did shop owners etc etc

Is that Counting (or not) students who may be studying .. and may now even be receiving 'Youth Allowance' while they are studying ?
