Yay! Our Agapanthers Are Starting To Flower

I love this time of year! The street is coloured with Jacarandas in bloom and our first Aggies have just popped their buds.

They are considered a weed in some areas. Years ago council sent us all letters stating this and asking we remove them

The agapanthus grow well around here.. tough enough to survive the salt laden winds.

I love the Jacaranda trees also, although there is not that many where I live. In Wollongong there is Jacaranda Ave which is beautiful when they are flowering.

i don't like agapanthus. i know why people plant it but i prefer dianellas with their fairy-like flowers. they are tough too and native.

My mum always called them Stars of Bethlehem, because they came out at Christmas.

Beautiful photos Icy, some of mine are about to flower we have white and blue, I find it odd that my agapanthers in the shade are starting to flower but the ones in full sun don't even have stems yet I would have thought it would be the other way around. We also have a jacaranda in our garden but no flame tree I wish we did they look so beautiful together.

I've called them Agapanthers since I went to visit May Gibbs' cottage Nutcote in Neutral Bay a few years ago. Volunteer helpers have kept her garden there as May would have had it back in the day.
There were little labels stuck in the beds saying what the plants were but with whimsical little changes. I can't remember what all the others were, but Agapanthers instead of Agapanthus tickled me and I've spelled them that way ever since.

Just for fun I googled "Agapanthers" and was surprised how many links came up with that mis-spelling.

Here's a little quote I found there by author unknown (or not named)

"Agapanthers.

Oh I thought I was so clever. The agapanthus are out everywhere, half the streets of the upper mountains have come into white and blue bloom, and so of course I thought it a great idea to follow suit.

First I found Agapanthus at an auction for cheap by the dozen.

But it was a bit of a stretch to get there and auctions for multiple items are such a risk if you only win one thing.

Then I found them at a dollar each in the local paper.

Then I mentioned it to the famous gardener. Who suggested that agapanthus are close to a weed, and all I need do is wait for the next time someone is reducing theirs with a hatchet and get them for free.

So much for the agapanthus.

The agapanthers are a different matter, ’tis the season, and several backpackers have disappeared without a trace.

The council that I come under considers them a weed........but, alot of people have them in their gardens. I rather like them.

The other tree in your photo is a brachychiton. Well worth planting for its spectacular show. My favourite tree is the jacaranda.

I can understand why they are treated as a weed, we bought our house 1.5 years ago and the back garden was covered in them. My poor OH spent hours digging over 100 of them out and we still have about 50 left, I spent a lot of time walking around the garden looking for new shoots and digging them up. It is not something I would plant in a garden even though they are beautiful when they flower.

Icy I am embarrassed to say I did not know how to spell agapanthurs so I copied your spelling. Mind you I prefer your way of spelling it

Do anyone in the other states actually pay cash money to buy them?

Unbelievably common here, and when you want more, just split them. None to split? Ask a neighbour, at least one in 3 houses here have them.
Even still, department and hardware stores do offer them for sale.

They have already been in place in the gardens in the houses we have lived in (NSW).

I did buy some dwarf white flowering ones in NZ a few years ago.

theyre not in flower yet but when that flame tree is in flower it really does put on a show

can anyone recommend something for a small area. less than one metre in length

by steps and in full sun all day. Front of the house

did have a tree there but tree had termites, so no more trees can go in

any ideas ?
