Kiwis Consider A Flag Of Their Own.

NEW Zealand Prime Minister John Key says he supports changing the national flag but would hold a referendum before any decision was made to ditch the existing banner.

The current flag has attracted criticism because one corner features the Union Jack, the symbol of former colonial power Britain, with the remainder consisting of four stars representing the Southern Cross constellation.

Mr Key said he believed the flag should display a silver fern, the national emblem already used by New Zealand sporting teams such as the All Blacks.

"I'd like to see a change," he told reporters. "But firstly it's not the single biggest issue that we as a country face. And secondly, even with those who want to change, there's not universal support for what we should change to.

"My personal view is, silver fern's the right way to go."

Mr Key said the New Zealand public was split 50-50 on adopting a new flag and he planned to sound out senior ministers about the prospect of holding a referendum on the issue to coincide with a general election due later this year.

He said Canada, another former colony of Britain, had never regretted adopting its distinctive maple leaf flag in 1965.

"I know it was a ferocious debate in Canada, but in the end would any Canadians look back and say they got it wrong with the maple leaf?"

I read Aussies complaning once about the Kiwis driving around Aus with silver ferns on their cars, thought it was funny 🙂

Yeah but they don't want the Union Jack in it anymore, seeing they're no longer under colonial rule. They want to keep the Southern Cross, though.

What to Pct? I hope to god that it's not a boxing kangaroo. I was surprised to see our local council had a neon billboard up wishing everyone a happy Australia Day with an animated boxing kangaroo. That's if we are going down the sporting flag path that NZ wants to.

Yes Mr Grizz and just across the road from where they had the billboard there was a major brawl in the pub last night.

Apparently it was mourners after a funeral for a young person that was killed on his bike. That's the story sortof told me when he got locked in the pub last night and was late for dinner. That would make a good Carlton Draught advertisement.

lol @ the boxing kangaroo, maybe that option is on the table with all the biffo going on at the moment and our preoccupation with all things sporting (not to mention all the sporting allusions from abbott)

I just want to see the Union flag removed - it's unnecessary and cringeworthy. Didn't do Canada any harm getting rid of the old flag.

I really like the Canadian Flag. I also like the Silver Fern idea for NZ.

I would like the current Aust flag without the Union Jack. I'm proud of our night sky and its symbol, which all people of the various backgrounds that call Australia home, now have in common.

Let the Boxing Kangaroo flag continue as a cape for those that can't keep it from the ground during celebrations.

AND let us have AUSTRALIAN MADE flags only.

(Besides, those types that have tattoos with the Southern Cross wouldn't have to get re-inked if it were changed.)

Prime Minister John Key says New Zealand may hold referendum to replace flag.

NZ doesn't need nor want an overseas online auction site, they have their own very successful one.

i did not consider that
