The Mudginberri dispute broke the AMIEU membership especially in NT.

That in turn eroded workers condtions re the tally system and exposed them to individual enterprise bargaining

agreements

The workers in turn then left the industry. Now we have no major (one is being built) abattoirs in the far north of Australia.

The people that complain about the cruelty of live meat export and unions in unison can thank themselves for the

situation.

It appears you can't have your cake and eat it too

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mudginberri_dispute

The Mudginberri abattoir was the focus of a major industrial relations dispute from 1983 to 1985 in Australia's Northern Territory which was notable for being the first successful use of legal sanctions against a union since the gaoling of Victorian Tramways union leader Clarrie O'Shea in 1969.
The accord solved a lot of the strikes. I'm sure we'll see plenty of strikes happening with this government.

Unions are vital because they address the balance of power in the workplace.

Grizz, that's a disappointing story about your union, however it also contradicts your earlier statement about having nothing against unions. I see the issue in a bigger picture...it's not about individual workers, but the group...for the betterment of workers overall. Still, it's not good that they didn't help you when you needed it.

mrgrizz, I don't know how long ago it was when you were an apprentice, when Mr Boris was doing his apprenticeship the unions had no say whatsoever in regards to apprentices, he wasn't even allowed to join until he had finished - that wasn't the unions doing though. As for not being paid while striking, there are at least 2 of the bigger unions that provide "strike pay".

Safety on building sites is something that needs fixing.

Funding cuts, benefit cuts...are other things that might warrant a strike.

The accord (Keating and hawk) stopped most strikes. They struck a deal where pay rises were indexed...superannuation and medicare was part of it.

It's pathetic that he was even fined, it's perfectly fine for employers to ignore safety on job sites and even when a construction worker dies on the job employers walk away free to do as they like, that is the ultimate bullying on the job.

Was the "Accord" like a bribe so that the union wouldn't call a strike?

You know like "protection'' of old
