There are two ropes that both take exactly 1 hour to burn from end to end. You are unable to cut the rope. How can you burn the two ropes in a total of 45 minutes?

They need to take 45 minutes to burn........ you would do it in 30 minutes.....

Both take 1 hour, that means 30 mins each.

Wait 15 mins before lighting both.

I would not burn them, I'd sell them to David Copperfield. Precision rope burning is everything in his line of work.

OK

Serious look at it now...

Two ropes, one hour. Want 45 minutes.

Light one of the ropes at both ends, and the other one from one end.

After 30 minutes one rope will be all burnt, and the other will be half burnt.

Then light that leftover half rope again, on the end that's not burning, and it will take 15 minutes for that rope to burn, burning from each end.

45 minutes.

Came to that conclusion by thinking that half of an hour was thirty minutes, and half of that again, was fifteen minutes...added up, the time you want.

And not to have toast at Lakeland's place.
