Where I work there are plenty of single mothers and fathers that must do overnight shifts.

Well thats a totally different debate all together. I realize I didn't specify but I was talking more about a traditional family situation where there are 2 parents and they both work full-time. (they actually still do exist so please forgive me for not taking all the different family situations into consideration when writing my post) Think about it, why would both parents of a young family need to work full-time? It usually comes down to the burden of debt. I dont mean to sound harsh but alot of people these days refuse to live within their means, they end up with massive mortgages and huge credit card debts, car loans ect that forces them to work extra hours just so they can keep on top of all the monthly payments the banks demand out of them. Thats the point I was trying to make earlier.

I just think it's the parents job to look after their children, not to say that FDC and creches/nannies ect dont do a good job, because I know that they do and for some family situations they are a necessity like those you mentioned ie; shift workers and single parent families ect but if you are a "career" minded mother I really dont think the government should be responsible for your childcare bills. If ones career is more important than bringing up ones own children then I dont see the point in having them in the first place. How much time in a normal day would these people even spend with their children? An hour or two in the morning and an hour or two at night, how much of this is quality family time?

Theres no shame in being a stay at home mum, I guess thats all I'm trying to say...

As a parent that's something I wanted to do myself. Surely by far the best form of child care is a parent staying home. Surely it costs the government more for these kinds of subsidies? Maybe I am old fashioned and I certainly don't mean to be offensive in anyway but if we have kids don't we want to be the ones raise them? I have known parents/carers that drop their kids off as soon as care opens and pick them up before it closes and I think that is such a shame as they get to spend so little time with them. I don't know maybe the world has moved on since mine were little!

I think the world has moved on. My eldest is nearly 26. I went back to work when she was 1, then about 8 mths later I was made redundant (the whole Dept. closed).

We had a lady come to our house to look after her. This lady had 2 kids of her own at primary school and she would collect them after school and bring them back to our house. It worked well. I preferred the care at home to putting a1yo in a daycare centre. My daughter loved to play with the older kids after school. The lady would take her out in the daytime...to the park, to her own house sometimes, to the school..
Either way we paid for all the daycare ourselves.

On the day she is not there, I have her.

Her mother has to work to keep the family going. She also has a son, and he is in primary school.

Todays way of living is different to yrs. gone by, where the mother had a choice if she wanted to work or not, these days, most mothers work to help pay the bills and keep a roof over their heads and food.

I have to agree there fiesta, on one hand its we are in a budget crisis and on the other we can suddenly find a whole heap of funding for a scheme such as this. Of course there is the issue that unless parents work they can't feed their kids and if they can't access decent child care it can create a whole host of other social problems. So I wondered whether it was actually cheaper to help support one parent mum or dad to stay home at the necessary times and work when possible.

As opposed to an entire funding model that will leave the country in more debt and create other issues as Chuk pointed out which in turn will mean more investment to train people up and invest in a quality framework etc etc

I hear you Crystal but the country needs kids in order to be healthy so if only the rich had kids our pool of workers into the future would be dismal. An issue we are already facing with not enough working age people paying tax and more older Australians needing support. Far better to create a system that supports families that will be of benefit later on to the country.

If Labor had just stopped making most child care workers university graduates in child care therefore pricing childcare out of the market then affordable child care would be sufficient for all.

I'm sure the child care policy will be restructured making it affordable again and not trying to garner all low paid workers into their own party or union like Labor did.

Honestly, labor corrupted everything to cling onto power and now are the party of "compassion" like the Greens, useless at everything except their own self interest.

Without in any way wishing to devalue the work and commitment of childcare workers, my personal feeling is that from the child's point of view, childcare in his/her own home is a better option than out of home care.

I am also uneasy with the insistance on education with regard to childcare centres. Why do two and three year olds need to receive "education"?

part of the educagtion a child gets in care is the ability to mix with different children, genders, abilities. To learn about sharing, taking turns, awareness of others. They learn how they fit in in the world. In their own home this is almost impossible unless there are siblings, but even then the above is limited. The term education is so broad. Its not sitting a 2 or 3 year old down and "teaching" them. Counting songs, nursery rhymes running, climbing, jumping, games. Even eating lunch in a group can teach a child about other cultures, teach manners, how to act in small groups

Its all learning/education. Taking calculated risks. In child care and education its all about learning through play.

Chuk, I do appreciate how important it is for children to learn social skills, I know how dedicated most childcare workers are and of course, when children are in out of home childcare they need to learn all the things you mentioned. I also realise that some parents are not very good at "socialising" their children

What worries me though is that these factors can sometimes lead to a warped assumption that childcare is better educationally for children than home care and that those kids who do not have this 'benefit' are somehow missing out.

I think that there needs to balance; one or 2 half days at kinda for the little ones is more than enough. When my daughter was little we were lucky that there were several families in our area with kids about her age, and we were visiting each other on daily basis. We even made a little pixie gate from our place to next door. And there are always various playgroups for both the kids and parents to make friends

Some of my friends worked full time early on, and their kids were left in creche, and I cannot say that they were better for it. I think it is important that kids are not just playing all day; it is good for them to have to go to the supermarket and learn to behave, or let mum to make a phone call, or clean house and understand they cannot be entertained and have somebody's undivided attention every second of the day. One of the most import things I was told when I was getting ready to have a baby was "children need to experience little frustrations and hurts to learn to cope with big frustrations and hurts when they grow up".

I totally agree with you super nova. It's all about balance.

One point I'd like to raise as well is all these families that have both parents that work full-time, it's a bit like whats the point? I know people are heavily in debt these days and need to pay mortgages ect but honestly (as a mother) if you are planning a serious career or want/need to work full-time why have children? I think the family unit is one of the most important aspects of life. People that work full-time when their children a young just miss out on so much of their childrens "growing up"
