Rare Car Collection Worth Millions Found In Barn

Sixty classic cars have been unearthed after lying for 50 years in massive barn are are expected to fetch $24,000,000 at auction.

From Corvettes to Aston Martins, the rising prices commanded by classic cars — especially unrestored, mostly original examples — has created a goldmine for those who hunt for old vehicles rotting away unattended in some barn.

Today, a French auction house revealed a discovery it called the King Tut of barn finds; a treasure trove of 60 European cars, including a rare Ferrari missing for decades, that had been slowly decaying in western France.

The Artcurial auction house says the cars belonged to a shipping magnate, Roger Baillon, who collected fine vehicles in the 1950s as part of a plan to build his own museum. When his business faltered in the 1970s, he sold off roughly half of his cars and simply left the rest parked in various states of exposure; some were in fully enclosed garages, but many were slightly protected from the elements by corrugated tin lean-toos.

Reminds me of a property near Dubbo.

The owner had a huge collection of old Holdens just sitting in his paddock.

So many people (including my hubby) would ask if he wanted to sell any of the cars or parts but he refused everyone.

They just ended up rotting away till they were of no use to anyone.

The guy could of made a fortune selling parts off them

I often see the term "barn find" on craigslist. and maybe half are really good barn finds, and half of those might be an ok deal. Many times people underestimate what it actually costs in the end to fully restore one of the dimond in the ruffs.. One advantage to this kind of project is you can build or customize the car any wany you like.

I sometimes daydream about going back in time and buying a car, digging a hole somewhere where I know it will still be there, then coming back to the present and digging it up. But often find myself not being able to decide between all the choices. The 1968 AMC AMX would be near top of the list of choices, A 1968 thru 1972 Nova, , a 1967 Camaro, , ,, a 1968 or 69 Malibu Chevelle, , a 1966 Mustang fastback, ,,, , a 1965 Baracuda, ,, ,, ,,,, a 1968 dart or valiant,,,,

I would say a 1965 Shelby Cobra Daytona Coupe, but you can buy the kits from Factory Five Racing, and build those in the here and now. They are actually better than the real ones, even though they don't come close in value.

I'd like to see replicas or kits of the others above being made. Another thing about building a replica kit is again, you can put it together how you like, engine and transmission of your choice, I would always opt for manual steering, crank windows, and manual floor shift transmission. You could even make the cars EVs run on electric.

There's a '58 Chevrolet and an early 60's Mopar sitting in there..........

My daughter had a school assignment, so we went looking for an old abandoned bus or truck...........and driving up this road, there was a bus sitting in a field. We asked the owner for permission to photograph it, and he gave us a guided tour of his car collection.

There had to be about 3 dozen '51 Chevrolets, in sundry states of disrepair on the property.

His plan was to use the best of the worst to restore a few of them.........including his pride and joy '51 convertible parked in a garage.........

Oh, and we did photograph the bus, also...............

Sad isn't it?

I often watch American Pickers, some of the places they go to with rusted hulks of cars, trucks, one guy had a collection of rusted out petrol bowsers, they couldn't strike a deal with him. He could't bear to let anything go.

Where does collecting end and hoarding begin.

Yep, we watch that as well. I get so angry at the guys that would rather let things rot than sell. They are hoarders for sure

Yeah, but sometimes they low ball the hell out people. I read an article that the whole show is all set up, everything is already cut and dry. The deals have already been done, the rest is just for TV.

There's a fine line between restorations and "resto-mods". It has been said that the only individual who makes money on a restoration is the one who buys it from the guy who restored it.

No doubt about that, Jet. Some of those hoarders, though, you just have to shake your head at the stuff they've accumulated and just let it rust back into the landscape.

You just have to wonder about the ppl who inherit all that junk, what they're going to do with when it comes to winding up the estate.

I agree, but many plan to restore a car and never get around to it. Unfinished projects are all too comon. That is what got me started in colecting die cast cars back in the mid 90s. No room in driveway, never could afford to fix them all and upkeep, and my so called friends would always try to catch me at the right moment where they could deal me out of one or more of them (rip me off). Also, whenever a house in the area went up for sale, the real estate agency would contact the township and i'd get letters with threats of fines if i didn't have them in an enclosed structure, or with current tags. Thats where historical tags would come in handy, but i figured if i wasn't driving them, may as well shrink them down to 1/18 scale and put them in the house. Thats when my car collection really exploded. I just wish I could still have them. Never got the chance to find drivers and passengers for many of them.

With me, it was impending nuptials that put the kybosh on my "fast car" life. I had a '74 Vega body tubbed out, full tubular chassis, glass front end, and a nodular iron 9-inch rear end. My plan was to stuff a rat motor and full-manual TH400 trans in it, and dial it to become the slowest car in the fastest bracket..........

Took a drubbing on parting it all out.

A relationship, or children trumps cars every time, no contest there. Even the little ones that fit on a shelf or in a case. I've known some that managed to balance it out, but only to a point.

I often think I would have done well in Nascar, uasally when I'm playing nascar video games, but never had an intrest in the sport when I was at the age to pursue such a carrier move. The race that got me interested in it was the one Ernheart Sr. died in. I was visiting a guy down the street and he was explaning the sport to me. Been hooked ever since.

I believe that to be the case with a lot of similar shows. Storage Hunters for instance. All set up beforehand. I can't be bothered with them.
