53 million vehicles have Takata airbags that could potentially spray shrapnel in your face when they go off ....

I first thought it was a recall of Sakata rice crackers, but it seems more serious than that.

Scary stuff. I checked the list of recalled cars. I'm safe - so far

Some of these models go back to 2002!

There may be more added to this list it seems.

Air bags can be just-peace of mind.

Try and find a Commodore in a wrecking yard where the air bags went off on impact.

Will admit air bags work in some cases

Some cars i have seen in for repair when when airbags went off was the

owner and home mechanic poked around under the dash-

looking for a live wire to install a u.beaut sound system......................Richo.

The ACCC is now involved. links on the website to the actual recall notices

"A number of car recalls have been announced in Australia due to faulty front passenger and driver airbags. The affected models are listed below.

The latest recalls affects models manufactured from 2003 to 2007.

Toyota announced that 181,000 motor vehicles are affected and Honda is recalling 131,775 vehicles. 102,000 Nissan vehicles are also affected but recall arrangements are not finalised.

In 2014, 168,000 motor vehicles were recalled in Australia because of these faulty airbags. Those recalls affected models made from 2000 to 2004.

My RAV4 was manufactured in 2003, I bought it new in 2004. How do I know if I have Takata air bags, and if I do, should I just go to the dealer whom I bought it from.

You could call the dealer. If it was a Toyota dealer, and you haven't moved, you should get a recall letter if yours needs to be refitted. My Toyota had one recall for something incredibly minor and non-injury-threatening, and I received a letter well after purchase to notify me. But with this I would definitely contact the dealer to check.

The number spread (red) pertains to the last 4 or 5 numbers of your VIN.

Your model designator (bolded) will be contained in the centre of your VIN

HD20V 1008 to 75726 and YD20V models 1013 to 5030 31/07/03 to 25/10/05

Was told today by dealer that our BMW was one of them. They said that it could be several months before repairs are carried out. Just call dealer and give last 5 numbers of VIN. They have a computer list of all cars involved.
