There does not seem to be any hard and fast rules about who pays these days.

From $5000 to the sky is the limit apparently.
We gave ours the money to do whatever they chose with it. Be that the wedding or a home deposit etc.

the celebrant cost us about $400 a few years ago.

we didn't shop around though.

foolishly bought a $500 suit.

i guess you could get away with a total of $500 (including the celebrant) if you do a BYO.

I would imagine there are those who have paid up to half a million, celebs, rock stars ect. but could get away with far less. Tradisionally, the bride's father pays I think, and never let the groom forget what it costed him. LOL..

It's almost de rigueur to 'live over the brush' these days. They should continue as they are, and the money saved on a wedding, put to something they can actually see and feel, like a house, furniture, carpets, etc. It's one day, and all that they will be left with are a few photographs...and perhaps some bad memories of guests falling out, and maybe even having a good old punch up.

I often wonder also how many couple spend an absolute King's ransom on the 'big day', and part company maybe a year or so later...or even sooner !

As much or as little and you want to pay.

When my son got married a couple of years ago they had the full on beautiful wedding, BUT, they are both very canny shoppers and it cost them a fraction of what it looked like. We gave them an amount we felt comfortable with and told them they could do what they wanted with it. Her parents wanted her to arrive at the ceremony in a "special" car so they paid for that, and also gave them some cash. I think the days of the brides parents paying are long gone.

We had a similiar situation with my husbands daughter. They had been living together for years, and have a child together, they recently got married.

Brides parents paid for the food.... grooms parents paid for the alcohol, both sets of parents chipped in and paid for the photographer, and the bride and groom paid for everything else.
All in all, with 60 guests and a celebrant, it came to a total of around $6K. Not bad i thought.

There is no hard and fast rules these days. I think most couples pay for their wedding these days. 🙂

My niece recently got married. My brother and his wife are divorced and remarried so she asked them to contribute $10,000 each and the groom's parents contributed $10,000. Apparantly they cost cut on everything so they would have enough for a 6 week honeymoon. My brother and his ex are ropeable as they were happy to contribute to the wedding but not the lavish honeymoon.

They are staying in 5 star hotels and restaurants, have been shopping in designer stores and generally living the high life. Both of them, nephew and new wife, earn good money but felt their parents should pay for everything. They go overseas just about every year anyway so it's not like it was a once in a lifetime thing.

My brother only got told about the extent of the honeymoon on the day of the wedding so he's had time to seeth. My niece is lovely and has been spoit most of her life but this time she's pushed my brother just that teensy bit too far and I suspect daddy's little girl will be told a few home truths . Oh to be a fly on the wall. lol.

Yes, they asked for and got a thermo kitchen thingy from her mother, a garden shed from my brother. Don't know about his parents. And they had one of the lists which you buy from at David Jones which I refuse to participate in. I got them a good quality kitchen knife $49 . They've been living together for 6 years. It was a nice wedding though.

My wedding was done on the cheap and it was fun. You don't need to spend a fortune, especially when the money is in the thousands and thousands....and could be better spent on a house deposit.

Wow. I don't know your family and I'm not usually so nosy....but for that showdown I'd love to be a fly on the wall too.

my brother is an expert in paying for weddings. He's already paid for two full-on jobs for his daughter - that's right daughter. She has done the live-with-them-for-several-years-get-married-and-then-break-up-a-few-months-later thing TWICE. She is now living with another guy for 6 years and wants to get married. I wonder if he'll be stupid enough to pay for another one.

We got married just over 7 years ago

Both had been married before

For me it was 24 years between husbands

The first one scared me off but this one chased me

Around for three years so I thought he's keen I had

better give him a chance

Our wedding all up cost around $8, 000

The ceremony was in a civic Park

Which cost nothing

We paid the celebrant $450 for a deluxe ceremony

By the time we deleted this and that it was more like

A budget

But still lovely

We hired a local soccer Hall

Hired white table cloths and by the time we decorated

It looked great

Hubby used to be a mobile dj

So we already had smoke machines, strobe lights

Flashing rope lights and a cd from every band

Of The 80s & 90s

We hired a mobile caterer with a three course

Ala carte meal

Bought about $2000 worth of spirits and wine

Over the year leading up to it

Was a memorable day on a shoe string

Every one had a great time and several people we

Know have hired the samel Hall since

For christenings , engagements etc

So they must have enjoyed themselves

Tacky is definitely in the eye of the beholder (my wedding wasn't BYO).

Remember that 4 brides on TV series. Talk about tacky! The money rolled but they never seemed to get value for money. The reception food would be badly cooked or the cake WAS tacky and as for the dresses....they'd wear something that didn't suit them, or didn't fit well or it'd make them look like a giant meringue. And it all cost a fortune. Very tacky.

Not sure how to do a wedding for $5000 unless it is a total DIY and there is no alcohol.

If you have a 100 people and food and drink is $200pp then there is $20,000 before you even get started.

Venue hire $5-10k. Cars $2k. Entertainment $2k. Flowers can cost $2-4k. Weddding cake can cost up to $2k. Dress up to $3-5k. Bridemaids $1k. Makeup for all $2k. Photography and video can be up to $3-6k.

There goes $50,000+ before you even book the honeymoon.

The first thing you do is NOT mention the word wedding. I saw an article just recently where they got quotes for exactly the same catering, venue, hair & makeup, drinks, photography etc. One they said was for a birthday (I think), the other for a wedding. The wedding quotes were astronomically more expensive.
I'll see if I can find it again.
