Here's one for all you cryptic crossword wizards. It was one of the clues in todays West Australian crossword and I thought it was clever enough to share:

the grounds of Chequers in the late fifties? (6,2,4)

Hint: being a Pom of somewhat mature years might be an advantge in solving this.

Actually, She-ele, being taught in primary school in Australia in the late 50's, we seemed to learn more about Britain than Australia.

Although, I do recall "News of the Week", where newspaper clippings were framed around the map of the world with a string from the paper to the country that was in the "news".

-------Bit different to the News, that our children shared with the class - so many domestic arguments and new "uncles", etc.

Well done, Deb. I try to do the cryptic every day and most of the clues are fairly ho-hum, but I thought that one was really original. another one I thought rather clever was: A handy army joint. (5)

Tgse--geez the cryptics test you out.

I try and do the one in the Herald every day

Never get it out-but been close-check the next day-see where i went wrong.

Can remember a clue that stumped me early

Across the top ..7..4

Clue was something like--------hairdressers staff.

Being a bloke -put in-- barbers pole---nothing would fit in after that.

Do you like the Guardian crossword? Much more difficult and therefore more enjoyable. It would be easier for you because it is British based.
