Perhaps more encouragement (grants/funds) from collaborators (petro/pharmaceutical/Pearl industry) could be more forthcoming too.

Independent research needs to be done and paid for before and while the results are tested, and drugs developed.

Of course pharmaceutical companies have their own research scientists, but then the research is owned by them, and the drugs can be expensive..
