Australians, be proud

There are efforts afoot to try and portray Australians as being mean and hard-hearted. That is fundamentally untrue. Here is our track record:-

Some stats on carers in Australia:

2.7 million unpaid carers in Australia

More than 770,000 carers are primary carers

300,000 carers are under the age of 24

150,000 carers are under the age of 18

Over 1.5 million carers are of working age

31,600 indigenous carers are over the age of 15

620,000 carers were born outside Australia

366,700 carers were born in non-English speaking countries

520,000 carers are over 65 years of age

The estimated annual replacement value of care provided in 2012 is over A$40.9 billion

It is estimated that carers provided 1.32 billion hours of unpaid care in 2010 with productivity loss estimated at A$6.5 billion

On average carers spend approx 40 hours per week providing care. It is estimated that carers of someone with a mental illness spend on average 104 hours per week in the caring role.

Would someone like to put up other countries' stats regarding caring? What are the stats for Sri Lanka or perhaps Iraq? Let's examine the stats for Syrian volunteers. Let's see some stats so we can see how mean Australians are.

We also care about animals being abused, just start petition about puppy being mistreated and everybody will care, but many of the same people do not give a bleep about innocent people who lost all, often members of their families, and who have been forced out of their country, being locked up indefinitely. The children in our prison have already seen things no child should have to witness. Some had members of their family killed in front of them. Sri lanka and Iraq are 2 countries torn apart by the years of their respective wars. Iraq even when its people were suffering under the sanctions imposed on the country, did their best to provide medical care, and take care off the sick and old. The WE bombed them, destroyed all their infrastructure, destroyed their social structure and now we are surprised that it all collapsed, and people are escaping.

You seem to labour under the false idea that people can't help others and volunteer here and at the same time be compassionate about people seeking refuge. Why is that? Most (well at least half) of us can multitask

We don't see the abundance of threads promoting the cause of the Homeless though, do we?

Or the war vets who don't get the assistance and counsel they need for Post Traumatic Stress disorder.

Or the Farmers who are being driven off their land by speculative Bank operations.

"Oh that's their own fault" is the common consensus.

No need to be concerned about the homeless. They get free housing and then rent it out. Probably negative gear it too. I think I saw it on ACA or read about it in the Telegraph.

How many homeless people do you personally know?

Just because you read it in a paper or saw a program on TV that fills the spot with dramatisation, just to stirr the pot, it must be true.

Out of a thousand homeless people they found one that rented out the home he was given to live in, for minimal rent, we go and paint all homeless people with the same brush.

How convenient to have a reason to say; "I don't care!"

I believe it was a group of 15 all up. All helped in the rescue.
