How are they going to make the Census work correctly?

They say everyone needs to participate but does everyone know that it's going to be on on the 9th?

You can request a paper form by calling 1300 820 275. It's open 24 hours a day. Just make sure you have your Census letter and enter the 12-digit Login number in the middle of the letter.

The letter will be sent out from August the 1st,(so that's 8 days for the PO to get them to everyone).

So if they go by "slow" mail" they may not reach everyone by the 9th and if you need a paper form it may

not get to people in time,(a typical Government "thing"),

I saw it at the top of my eBay page so I googled it to get the secured site.

So that's thousands of jobs they've canned,(the ones that used to deliver the census).

Thinking further, could the use of computers for the Census be a precursor (never a more appropriate word!) to Voting on-line.

Using our Tax File No., Medicare Number, or Driver's Licence Number, .........remember, there is no Australia Card.

And a further loss of jobs within the Electoral Commission and in polling booths.

from what i'm hearing on talkback radio its a bit of a stuff-up.

personally i didnt hear anything about the census until mid last week, i rekon it was lost in all the election goings on.

only having 10 days give or take to organise paper documents to be sent out was no where near long enough.

as it turns out i recieved my paper copy plus an envolope without asking for it yesterday from a guy going door to door, prolly cos i'm classed as 'out in the sticks'

i really dont think telling people they will be fined $180 per day if they dont comply will keep the poor souls who cant organise paper copies before the 9th feeling good.

why paper copies couldnt have been available from post offices or council offices i dont know.

Something to do with paying for the bulk distribution, and the footspace taken in-store, perhaps?

Ha ha Richo.

And that's the point I'm making.

There's a profit to be made on those "must-have" items that take up floorspace.

That is the reason Tax Packs were no longer made available at the PO. No (or not enough) revenue.

That's why Magazine Distributors and Newsagents took on the contract to store and supply them to the Public. (For a small fee)

Newsagent info is correct as at 2010.

I received my Census letter AND PAPER COPY mid last week.....long before the 1st August.

My concern this year is that the information is being stored long term along with the information which can identify who filled out the form. What a handy way for the ATO to do a bit of cross referencing.

I was worried if i can do it on a tablet,you cannot do some surveys ect without adobe but Im assuming being a Goverment thing they will think of tablet users

.I also thought it was a interesting plan if they seriously think servers will not crash if we all have to get online that night.

apparently its near impossible to get a form sent out due to congested phone lines.

One thing that did please me it only has to be submited by Mid September so you have a bit of time to get it in before that $180 per day fine. Im assuming if I cannot log in on the day I can do another time and same for people who need a form sent.

I read that people in remote areas,hard to access internet areas and suburbs demmed to have an elderly population or low take up of e -tax ect have been selected to get paper forms automatically delivered.

That may explain why we received a paper copy in the initial mail out.....we are both in our 70s and don't use e-tax...the accountant who does our business tax returns also does our personal returns.

We certainly are not in hard to access the internet areas....we are in suburban Sydney just near the airport and there are a number of retired people in the area. Far more retirees than young families.

I think I might fill out the form over the weekend then if I have trouble getting online I will just stuff it in the envelope and be done with it.
