Sam Dastyari Resigns From Labor Frontbench

WHEN Sam Dastyari burst on to the political stage, many saw him as a fun jokester.

He was the pollie who delighted in baiting Pauline Hanson over halal snack packs and made riding the “Bill bus” look like a road trip you’d actually want to take.

But there’s more to the NSW senator than his weakness for a breadless kebab.

At just 33 years old, Mr Dastyari was a powerbroker in the Labor Party and influential enough that Labor leader Bill Shorten was standing by him despite increasing calls for his removal over Chinese “cash for comment” allegations.

Mr Dastyari ultimately succumbed to the calls on Wednesday night and resigned from Labor’s frontbench.

He will continue to serve as a NSW senator.

poor fellow was bitten by the canberra 'snout in trough' beetle, only cure is sitting on the backbench and hoping everyone forgets what you did.

i think he might have been bitten several times to have gotten through such a thick skin.

oh well gives the libs something to smile about while they worry if any on their sides done anything similar.

"The prime ministerial assault sparked a savage backlash from Labor, with shadow special minister for state Stephen Conroy today claiming Ms Bishop had breached standards set by Mr Turnbull.

He said the Foreign Minister had accepted an iPad, airfares and accommodation from a Chinese-owned company, and her West Australian division of the Liberal Party had been given more than $500,000 from donors with links to the Chinese Government. All had been officially declared, as had Mr Dastyari’s $1670 from a Chinese billionaire to cover travel costs after his allowance as a senator ran out. There is no evidence the Senator or the minister did anything illegal. “By Mr Turnbull’s own supposed standards, Australians have to wonder if his Foreign Minister has been compromised by foreign donations,” Mr Conroy said in a statement. “Ms Bishop isn’t some junior senator — she is the Foreign Minister of the country and deputy leader of the Liberal Party. “It’s time Mr Turnbull put up or shut up — either he supports Labor’s call for a ban on foreign donations or he proves that he is totally beholden to the chequebooks of the Liberal Party’s foreign-backed donors.”

Dastyari is a good example of everything that is wrong with Australian politics. A talentless, moral-free hack in the mould of Sophie Mirabella. Hopefully he'll follow in her footsteps.
