LOL! My elderly Mum couldn't cook to save her life! Maybe her cutlets would have been better with sawdust coating?! Couldn't have been worse!

So who can afford lamb cutlets nowadays? Lamb used to be the cheaper "go to" meat for most Aussies. Now I think it's chicken. The whole bird or cheaper cuts are still fairly inexpensive. I get a roast; Noodle dish, curry, or pie filling, & sometimes even a soup from a bird of around 2.5kg in weight for 3-4 people each time. Add appropriate veg to each incarnation & your chook changes flavours & isn't boring!

Have you seen the prices for lamb @ butchers & supermarkets recently? I'll bet it's not the farmers who are getting the profits! & how can chicken growers & processors supply a prepared fowl for less than $5.00 a kilo & still have the retailer take their cut? I guess they lose out too?

DD went to Woolies the other day to buy passionfruit. The produce section didn't have any but she did manage

to get some tinned Passionfruit Pulp (select brand). I checked where it came from. "Made in China".

Australia doesn't grow passionfruit now we have to import them. Disgusting.

You have to check tinned fruit too because very few are Australian grown now. We prefer the tinned fruit in syrup rather than juice, but none of the syrup ones are grown in Australia, so we don't buy them any more.

Rice is another thing that irritates me. You really have to check the packet for that too. The size of the bag can alter the growing location. A 2kg bag of Sunrice might be grown in Australia, a 1kg bag grown in Thailand. Sometimes the medium grain is grown in Aus, other times it's Thailand. Same with the long grain. Last time I bought rice I got the Woollies Select because that day, it was the only one grown in Aust.

I know the main rice growing area in NSW has had lots of rainfall over recent months but rice grows in water, so it's no excuse!

It's easy for people to get caught with quite a few things. A brand might be Australian owned, so show the symbol reflecting that. Yet, when you look at the packet, the contents are grown/produced overseas. Jars of minced garlic, ALL contain local and imported ingredients. They don't have to specify where the imported ingredients come from, so who knows if they are up to Australian standards?

Tippy, looking for Aussie rice drives me nuts. Haven't been able to buy any for ages.

I found the expensive Clever Rice is made in Australia, but I can't get it all the time.

When I find an Aussie rice, I buy heaps of it to tide me over.

Same with the minced garlic. Sometimes, WW has their own brand, Aussie grown.

But they hide it in the F & V section. It's in a tube usually next to the bulbs.

And it's hard to get Aussie grown bulbs of garlic as well. Either Mexican or Chinese.

We could have a thread with thousands of items that used to be grown and produced in Australia, but are not Australian anymore.

Last year in winter I wanted to buy some oranges and all the oranges in the supermarket had stickers "Product of USA"

When I asked the manager why we have to buy oranges from America, he tried to tell me they are out of season in Australia. I told him to try and pull my other leg. I had just returned from Queensland and where I had been, they had oranges growing on the median strips in town.

Erica.

Wasn't there talk of new rules whereby supermarkets were going to make it easier for shoppers by having aisles allocated for Australian made and easier to read labels listing where items are made. Can't say I've noticed.

legarlu, you are correct.

The new labelling requirements will show what percentage of a product is local.

Not sure when it is becoming mandatory.

Good idea Erica, what about a thread and a running list of brands of All Australian items hard to find.

For example I didn't know about the rice stalks just mentioned and will look for it now.

There was something recently on Landline about imported tinned tomatoes, LaGina made in Italy processed by underpaid migrant workers and grown in conditions that were questionable. MP Sharman Stone (now retired) was interviewed saying they should

not have been allowed into Australia, but there was an influx at the time of imported tinned tomatoes.

I don't walk too well due to vertigo & other issues. I find ALDI stores quite convenient as they are small in size & most items are sourced from Australia. My 4 local stores even have a similar layout to make for a fast shop & their trolleys are well maintained so don't go south on you. The fresh meat; Veg; Fruit; Dairy; & cheeses etc are all locally sourced from within Aust.

Some items are European; As you'd expect from a German owned limited company. Their Beglian chocolate is great!

Very little from Asian countries in the way of canned & frozen fruit & veg, tuna, tomato paste & rice. I buy my LG rice from ALDI; As I was having trouble finding locally grown rice.

All the similar items that Coles & Woolies have under their own labels are sourced from OS ; They seem to be Aussie sourced @ ALDI.

It's worth a look! My favourite products are their canned tuna in brine $1.69 for a 450g can & tomato paste @ $1.25 for a 500g jar, & Aussie grown canned corn or creamed corn for 79c a tin. All products are great value @ a budget price! Their pasta cooks up well & is very budget friendly. You can get 500g or 1kg packs. They even do gourmet tricolore pasta from Italy in various shapes!

If you have an ALDI store nearby I'd recommend you take a look @ their offerings. Worst days to shop are Wed & Sat - that's when the big stuff in their catalogues come out. Unless you want those items; go another day, or later in the day on those days. & NO I'm not sponsored or in any way related to ALDI - JMHO for my shopping

Do look @ the grocery lines! The prices are great & most items are from Aust. Even the canned pineapple! (Not a Thai canned pine in sight!)

I actually prefer the frozen puff & shortcrust pastry from ALDI over the two main name brands available elsewhere. It cooks up better & no soggy bottom crust issues - even if not blind baked.

My daughter's fave ALDI product is their Basilica pasta sauce. Less than $2.00 a jar & just add to some cooked pasta for a quick vego meal!

We've recently found upon taste that their Cheese spread & Tasty Cheese spread in a jar is the same cheesy stuff you get in Le Snack packaged brand name snacks. Add ALDI wafer crackers as part of a cheap entree or cheeseboard!

I'll take a look, but I'm all stocked up on stuff right now. But I do like to keep

a backlog of rice. Just in case the Aussie stuff disappears off the shelves.

I like to make my own pasta sauce, using canned diced tomatoes - only takes 2 mins anyway.

Daughter will be interested in the cheese in a jar.

Hi Ima I'm in Mill Park Vic. You said you were nearby? Coffee? My place is fine if you can handle cats. Please message me! Cheers; Karon. It's always nice to meet others when you tap & type but can't get out much! Feel free to decline! That's ok too!
