Labor Party to consider affirmative action plan for gay candidates

FEDERAL and state Labor would have quotas for gay and transgender candidates in winnable seats under a divisive affirmative action plan.

The deal, believed to be between the dominant Left and the Old Guard factions, has been done ahead of this weekend’s state conference, and draws Opposition Leader Bill Shorten into the debate.

The issue, to be discussed last night by Labor’s Rules Committee, has been labelled “toxic” after some in Rainbow Labor, who met to discuss the proposal on Tuesday night, did not want to speak out for fear of being labelled homophobes.

Some have also questioned why the affirmative action plan for the LGBTI community would start in four years but an affirmative action plan for indigenous candidates would not begin until 2030.

Why not seek the best candidate for each seat? This is pure lunacy which puts in doubt the ALP's claim to be the 'party of ideas'. It seems as if the ALP has run out of ideas.

If they where serious about the job, they would dump dopey Shorten and elect Penny as the leader. She is a lot more intelligent, articulate and in touch with the real world than anyone else in the party.

A female, Asian, Lesbian prime minister. Now that would really show Australia has come of age. Who knows, I might even vote for her myself.

Why not go the whole slog and suggest a female, Asian, lesbian with cancer, AIDS and ingrown toenails. Lets not be discriminatory; all for one and one for all I say. Sheesh, lets throw in a muslim as well. The politicians wouldn't give a damn about people with any of those conditions or backgrounds. It's all about votes!

That is the point I was trying to make. With Labor its all about cheap stunt tokenism. The sad truth is while Penny Wong is probably the best candidate by far to lead the party and would make a suitable prime minister she will probably never get the chance.

If Labor had the guts to back her , they might find Australians are a bit more mature than they give us credit for. Labor just seem to target the lowest common denominator with thier electoral campaigns and leaders. Offering up a village idiot like Bill Shorten for us to vote for is an insult to our intelligence, as was their last election campaign, full of bannal lies and spin.

The end result .... a fairly mediocre Liberal offering beat them.

It just seems to be a race to the bottom for both of our major parties. Trump and Hillary here we come.

it would be great if we got back to just men of a certain age running things both in govt and business like it was back when things were good.

dont ya hate seeing women in the background during question time all smiley wearing nice outfits. obviously just their to look good, not there because they make govt better.

Wow, talk about deja vu! This is the same argument that was trotted out when it was first suggested that women should be given more of a look in when it came to selecting candidates.

In reality, "affirmative action" doesn't give anyone a unfair advanage, it simply gives them "a fair go" as in making sure those doing the choosing do not automatically (and often unthinkingly) dicriminate against them.
