a lot of animals, dogs in particular don't like fireworks so please make sure your pets are safe during the new years celebrations.

i know Foo hates fireworks so he'll be a shivering mess. i'll have the curtains closed and music turned up so it has less effect on him untill the explosions finish.

I put an old ice cream container of water by the side of the road.

It's late in the day, and it's still hot, here.

Maybe someone wandering, lost, scared, will appreciate a drink.

It's a small gesture.

A few years ago, I had a much loved and very expensive sheepdog climb a 3 metre high weldmesh enclosure in fright one fireworks night. Luckily he didnt catch his foot at the top of the weldmesh, but he was missing for several days. It was a very worrying time, but eventually he came home looking much worse for wear. It happens.

The farm dogs now live in the "Houndog Hilton." A large raised cage with mesh roof, grating for cleanliness, insulated panels for their sleeping quarters and a deck with a roof over the top to watch the world go by. This is all placed in the shade of a large tree with a view to the river.

We live in a very large, semi urban town and some nosey parker not realising the dogs ride around in the ute, chasing sheep most of the time thought it was cruel. We had a knock on the door from an RSPCA inspector. She inspected the setup and thought it was probably the best accomodation for working dogs she had ever seen.........

well we made it through to the new year without too much fretting. my bedroom is amazingly sound proof once the curtains are drawn and doors closed.

only a few really loud bangs were heard and with the telly on foo didnt notice (i was watching Independance day 2)

i hope everyone was as sucsessful as i was keeping their loved one/s safe.

You are lucky you were not in Sydney David.....it was horribly noisy here as there was a lot of cloud around keeping the sound down.

We live on the shores of Botany Bay, near the airport and actually have 4 lots of fireworks within 3 hours. The local council has a fireworks display at 9pm and midnight and the same 2 displays on Sydney Harbour.

No chance of ignoring any of them, even with the sound turned up on the TV.

here in wallyroo we had 2 official displays, one at 9.30 for the kiddys and then the big display at midnight. i do think the weather conditions made the noise less this year, past years have been louder.

but its the people who manage to get a hold of illeagle firworks that cause most trouble. i live in a area where most houses are empty most of the year but xmas/new year the place fills to overflowing.

police were at the house 3 doors down 9pm last night where a group of younger revelers have set up camp.

yelling and screaming. a broken booze bottle on the road out front of their house.

i'm guessing one of the elderly residents called the police and complained.

these dills think when they come to country they can do as they please.

a few houses further down and we had a trailer full of unregistered motorcycles, off they went riding all over the beaches and dunes.

back to fireworks, just heard there were 2 deaths interstate with fun gone wrong.

they paid the ultimate price for a few minutes fun.

best to let the experts handle explosives.

Indeed. There are several numpties around here who set off illegals, random times/days (police never do anything)

There have not been many around here this year......far less than previous years, thank goodness.

When we lived out bush we would often have large bonfires in the winter months. We would use the front end loader and pile fallen trees into huge heaps on the farm or go out to an old quarry or railway cutting in the scrub for "a bushie".. Fireworks used to be part of the fun, along with making bush damper and burning magnesium VW gearboxes. They look like a giant firework, when they light up ...

Now I,m a suburbanite I have still got a couple of large eskies full of fireworks hidden away in the shed. I,m not game to let them off now so they are just sitting there ageing with the wicks getting dryer. I guess the kids will find them when I fall off my perch. Maybe the grandkids will have some fun with them.....
