NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian has tasked a three-member panel with convincing the federal government to help lower the rate of immigration into the state.

"It is becoming increasingly clear that the current high rates of population growth are putting even more pressure on our infrastructure," she said in a statement.

"The Premier, Gladys Berejiklian, says Australia’s immigration levels are “about right” but called on the states to have a national discussion on how to cope with the increasing pressures on infrastructure and local services. . . .

The debate over immigration has re-emerged recently, with several Federal Liberal MPs calling for a reduction in levels to relieve pressure on overstretched infrastructure and services.

But Ms Berejiklian did not support their calls.

“In Australia I believe our current level of migration is about right – but we cannot ignore the reality that communities are feeling growing pressures on local services and infrastructure,” Ms Berejiklian’s speech said.

I don't live in NSW but I wonder just what Ms Berejiklian has done since becoming premier to build more sorely needed appropriate infrastructure in her state. She is the premier after all.

I think she's just another cynical politician, recognising the zeitgeist and changing her story to fit, in order not to alienate the voters.

It's quite obvious that the politicians want all the taxes from the larger populations but don't want to spend any money on roads, schools and hospitals.
It's better spent on helicopter rides.
Million dollar BMW cars.
By-elections and supreme court cases to sort out the lack of filling in applications correctly and made up electioneering so Abbott can get a free trip to ride his push bike

NSW has plenty of money and plenty is being spent on infrastructure here in NSW.

Icyfroth. Thanks for that list of bus routes, train lines, dual lane roads, shopping centres, schools and hospitals being built in the suburbs where the population is increasing.
Such forward thinking from the politicians.
Oh, hang on none of them are mentioned.
How come in the fifties they could do it but now houses are built everywhere and nothing to support these bulging suburbs

That's actually a valid point, Marwi.

The NSW Government has approved out of control residential development, cramming ppl into units, like battery hens,without taking into account the stress it would put onto existing infrastructure.

I do think Ms Berejiklian is doing the right thing though, in saying enough for the time being.

Yes, with pre-election looming, it's a very likely motivation for Ms Berejiklian to instigate this move.

But it's a valid call, and about time, IMO.
