eBay satchels

Hi there. I was charged $9.15 for postage and waited on the seller to upload the tracking number. It wasn’t entered so I messaged the seller, with no reply. The item arrived today, in a 500gram eBay satchel. I understand how the eBay satchels work, but there is no address label or Australia post label, that can be scanned, just my name handwritten in texta and one old stamp stuck on the satchel. I’m annoyed to think I have paid $9.15 for postage and the seller has snuck the parcel through as a large letter. What are your thoughts, please.

You got what you ordered in, presumably, advertised condition, at the price you were happy to pay.

If it is an issue, don't buy from this seller again.

Are you saying the seller only paid $2.20 for postage?

I'd be peeved too, to be honest.

You didn't get the sort of postage service you paid for.

$9.15 implies a small prepaid satchel with tracking.

A large letter on the other hand, you'd expect to pay maybe $3 or $4 postage.

Okay, so the item reached you but you were paying for a service you didn't get.

That's exactly why the seller didn't reply to your messages. He knew very well there was no tracking.

He should have at least replied to say the item was posted on such and such a date.

So that's 2 ways in which he let you down a bit.

I find it all a bit underhand and I am not sure why some sellers do it to themselves, it never ends well. Customers never like to feel they have been a little bit cheated or taken advantage of.

It wasn't an entirely satisfactory transaction for you and you have the right mention it in your feedback.

It's actually fairly difficult to get AP to accept articles packaged in satchels as large letters - they really don't like it because they like putting letters through sorting machines, and plastic behaves very differently to paper and card etc so is really not suitable for that, it often doesn't matter if the package technically meets the specs of a large letter. It has to be packaged extremely well, like the satchel was practically shrink-wrapped on, and even if it wasn't, a small satchel is too big to only have one stamp, it would need 2 at a minimum.

Since you did not get an underpaid mail notice, I'm assuming it's highly likely the seller did.

A couple of things here.

If it was thrown into a red post box, it wouldnt have gone through acceptance at the PO.

Not knowing where it came from, but if it was Sydney or Melbourne, due to the increased volumes (lockdown) at the moment, there is very little compliance checking going on thru the mail centres (don't ask how I know), so it may have just gone through and not actually checked for correct postage. It definitely wouldnt have gone thru the letter sorting process, satchels are automatically put through parcels..

And again as it was delivered to Melbourne, again it may have missed any compliance checking as again lockdown is putting pressure on these things.

I'd definitely mention it in your feedback considering the money your charged should have included tracking.

Happy with the item - Fine.

Unhappy with being overcharged for postage - Dob them in!
