I have just had a phone call from somebody telling me over a thousand dollars has been taken from my account. ,and to wait so they can fix it.

I haven't used ebay in about a month ,I have only bought a phone holder.

What is happening

It’s such a well-known scam that it alarms me when anyone is caught out by it.

I suggest you watch this YouTube video (on the WIRED channel on YouTube) featuring Pierogi from Scammer Payback, discussing the various scams prevalent today, including the Amazon hacked account scam which is essentially the same as the eBay hacked account/fraudulent eBay purchase scam. Pierogi is the face of Scammer Payback. (Wikipedia entry on him, so that you can feel assured I’m not giving you malicious misinformation : https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scammer_Payback)

Once you’ve watched it, I hope you’ll be aware of the red flags of these scams, and will be more able to remove yourself immediately from a scam attempt.

Most importantly - don’t answer their questions, give no information, open nothing, download nothing.

Hopefully from a reputable seller.

A warning yet again for all new , inexperienced buyers about the hundreds of thousands of items that have been listed on hijacked accounts over the last 6 months or so - ongoing.

Hijacked Italian, German and old dormant Australian accounts listing thousands of items.

While these items exist, they are NOT in Newtown or GPO Perth.

They'll generally be sent from places like AliExpress by Chinese scammers / criminals who are NOT the real account holders.

These scammers have your details which can be passed on and/or sold to other criminals.

So even if you've had recent eBay transactions, DO NOT believe scammers who phone you pretending to be from eBay, Paypal, your bank etc
