phorum, just looking through the boards, I have often wandered why are customers so "cheap" as well as very dishonest on Ebay, and not really anywhere else?

I still refuse to think that it's a special kind of people/customers - people are people, surely, no matter where they shop!

But there is this problem of postage going on forever - with Ebay shoppers seem to be willing to do anything to get out of paying for return postage!

Weather measurements are in the listing or not - those who want to blame the seller somehow always will, claim measurements are wrong (easy to tweak the measuring tape and fabric to appear different from the listing), and clothing with no measurements (S,M,L) is never quite "in my opinion isn't large enough, or small, or whatever) - that is without bothering to ask for the measurements first!

Someone prior just said: "You shouldn't have to ask for measurements"

Why on Earth not?

How hard can it be? Especially if you like something and have to have it.

But even that is never a guarantee of the perfect fit - for that you have to trawl the real shops and try things on.

But to blame the sellers in almost every instance and find ways not to have to pay return postage is not cool

With all that - I am not surprised in the slightest that sellers are giving less and less info about anything in the listings - to reduce the fodder on which buyers can manipulate it to their advantage and easier claim not as described - and not pay return postage, or worse still, get the refund and keep the item!

I'm looking at a clothing item I would like to buy but there is no sizing info anywhere in the listing, other than S, M, L, XL etc. I messaged the seller to ask if they would exchange if the one I purchased was not the right size or if they had a sizing chart available.

I just got a reply telling me no, there is no sizing chart available and yes, I can exchange for a different size but postage both ways would be my responsibility.

I suppose I could message them again asking for measurements but should I really have to? I doubt I'll go through with the purchase now but I'm disappointed because I was really keen on it.

Clothing sizes in listings was a bit of a running battle. I am in favour of them. Sellers of mountains of garments mightn't want to measure them all. But they should put the best chart in at least for the brand. Be wary of the Brand's own measurements, too. Different years can have different sizing as the waistlines increase and the number goes down... Good luck. Hope it fits well.

A good seller would have just measured up your two closest options I think. Rather than what they said about post.

If it is an item that is manufactured in bulk the measurements can vary in the same size.

My cousin used to be a boutique dressmaker.....I wanted one of her dresses and when I tried on what I thought was my size it was a bit tight. I asked if she had the next size and when she came back I pointed out that it was the same size. When I tried it on it was parfect.

She explained that when she used the electric scissors they cut at an angle and the bottom layers of fabric could be up to an inch larger all round than the top layers.

I have often listed multiple numbers of the same item, same size, same colour, same everything and there can be as much as 2cm difference in the chest measurement. In those circumstances I usually say that I have only measured a sample and there may be a slight difference in the item they receive. Never had any complaints about not fitting for any of those items.

Perhaps some sellers are deliberately not giving measurements so if the item doesn't fit it is classed as a change of mind and they may have refund of item price only for change of mind (I do). If they gave measurements and they turned out to be wrong then it would be a not as described which would mean they would have to give a full refund and pay for return postage.

Regarding the postage thing ......... With the "free postage" badge, some new buyers (who don't sell) actually believe ebay pays for the postage (it should be "postage included" not "free postage").

Also, Paypal heavily advertises "return your item for free" all the time !!!!! .......... so that's why I think there are more buyers encouraged to think this way ..... sigh.

catthy,

of course, if PP is offering free returns (for which they pay I assume, and don't take it out of seller's account) - fair enough, we should all take advantage of it if we have something to return.

I was talking about other buyers - those who either don't qualify or don't know about it - those who do their damnest to invent a reason to send item back and seller having to pay return postage.

I think (can't be sure) that majority of those wouldn't open dispute with PP anyway, thinking getting a refund through Ebay is an easier target, but Ebay doesn't offer free return so they have to blame the seller somehow.

Not all buyers think that it's free returns for one & all, they know damn well that is not the case - otherwise they wouldn't have to invent the reasons for seller to have to pay their return postage.

I shop on heaps of different sites (a God send when you don't have to leave the house or work, as the only free time there is is when the stores are closed), and have gotten to know heaps of sellers - and no one has that problem - in fact, the return rates are so miniscule, 000000,1% - without any complaints about having to pay return postage.

Hence my previous comment about Ebay's customers being (behaving) so vastly different - and was just wandering why that is so.

With the seller in question here, if I wanted a garment (where I was unsure of the brand measurements), I would ask for them.

For the seller to have an enquiry as to fit, and say only that an exchange is ok but shipping would be my responsibility both ways...I would not buy.

Not because the seller is in the wrong. If an item doesn't fit and I return it I expect it to be at my cost, if the measurements weren't specified. No seller mistakes, my responsibility.

But, the seller received an enquiry about fit and could just have sent the measurements right then.

Only saying a return is ok, with shipping at buyer expense, would leave me not buying. As I would have no real idea if I might have to do that. Why risk a loss for the sake of not getting a clear, upfront set of measurements? No thank you.

Always best to know the measurements and no harm in asking. If the seller can't be bothered at that point, no sale.

So as Lurker said, should she really have to? (Ask)

At that point the seller should have provided them.

I buy quite a lot of clothes online fixnwear, from places like Ezibuy, The Iconic etc (and like it or not that's who eBay clothing sellers are competing against) and they all offer free return and exchange as well as clear sizing charts. I'm not encouraging rorting the system or trying to rip sellers off, but this particular sellers attitude makes it very easy for me to say pffttt and take my business elsewhere. That's the point I was trying to make.
