IVE BEEN SCAMMED , PLEASE HELP

Seller initially apologisedand said he had a family death and i would receive the item i paid 450 for no later than yesterday.
however he has removed all listings and isnt replying any longer.

i go to claim, but because i used paypal as a guest i have to sign up, so i go to and it says to input the transaction ID. that i should have a copy in an email, however i do not have a receipt number for the item. or an email receipt. Yet it still says that i hgave paid for the item.

im confused as to what exactly is going on or how to take anything further. but it is distressing me.

could anyone help please

What info did you need to put into paypal when you purchased as a guest?

Did you have to give an email address,if you did then check that for a message from paypal regarding payment?

You can go into his account and check on his feedback and then check down the left hand side where it says sold items,click that and your item should show up in his sold section.

I'm not sure what you mean by no later than yesterday, nobody can say how long the postal service will take (the dates on listings are not real, they are dates ebay makes up and inserts on EVERY listing) Even 'next day delivery' on express post things is hit and miss,with lots of if's, and's and but's added by Australia Post

If the seller did indeed have a death in the family, then it is not all that strange they might have ended all their listings early, and that they are not sitting by the computer, responding to messages

What was their feedback like? are they still a registered ebay user?

While indeed, they MIGHT be a scammer, they also might be someone whose family member has just died and ebay is the least of their worries right now?

I'm afraid I have had no experience with using paypal as I guest, so I don't know how to help on that front

I'm sorry to tell you, but there is no PayPal Buyer Protection on purchases when you use PayPal as a guest.

From the PayPal user agreement, just so you can confirm this information:

"S12.1 You may be eligible for the PayPal Buyer Protection Policy if all the following requirements are met:

Your payment is made from your account and not directly from a Credit Card processed through our Website Payments Pro or Virtual Terminal service;"

That being said, all hope is not lost just yet. You may be able to initiate a case via eBay if the original estimated date of arrival was less than 30 days ago, as there is no clause that excludes PayPal guest payments from eBay's Money Back Guarantee - in you purchase history on ebay, next to the item and on the right, should be a dropdown menu where you can select the option to report the item wasn't received. If it directs you to PayPal, try instead going to the resolution centre, link: http://res.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ResolutionCenter with the item number, or even the Help & Contact page (link to that is up the top of every eBay page) as usually all of your recent purchases will be displayed there and you can click on the one you need help with.

If you're not able to find resolution with eBay, contact your credit card provider to discuss your options, as you might be able to initiate a chargeback.

All good points (which I neglected to consider 😞 ) - the date of purchase would actually make a significant difference to the advice.

You've received info from the seller that there was a death in the family and the item has been sent.

Doesn't sound like the definition of a scam, unless the information provided is false which you do not yet know.

If the item is coming by post it often takes longer than expected. Please give it some time.

with a case with so many variables i'd suggest calling ebays customer service and explaining the situation. that way they can ask you questions and look at sellers messaging.

Digi, unless it has changed very recently, if an item was paid for as a guest you can make a claim by opening an account and the transaction will be tranferred to the account and you open the dispute as usual.

OP....have you opened the paypal account with the same details as you used when you made the guest payment....same credit card, name and addres etc?

If so, has the tranaction appered in that account? If not, ring paypal and ask them to transfer it manually.

You should then be able to open the dispute.

I have never needed any receipt to open a dispute as it is all recorded in my paypal account.

According to PayPal OP should have received an email receipt and from that they can sign up and then put a claim in.

But OP says they never received that email.

But as OP hasn't come back to the thread then it seems that they got their answer?

You don't need any receipt to open a paypal account.....you just use the name, address and credit card you used to pay as a guest. This should open the PP acount and transfer the original transaction into the account. If it does not transfer the transaction the OP needs to ring PP to do it manually.

The dispute can then be opened in PP without the need for the original receipt.

But PayPal are saying that to sign up once you have purchased as a guest you need to do it through the email that you receive from PayPal in order to dispute the transaction made,it's what I'm being told by PP.

If that is true then it has changed very recently. It has never been a requirement of opening a PP account that you need to have a receipt. Most people open their PP accounts before purchasing anything.

I suspect that the use of the receipt is to just access the PP site....but I would NEVER access PP through a link in a receipt or email of any sort, especially to open an account. I would go through my browser.

I can't help wondering if the OP has checked their spam folder for the missing receipt...it is more likely to be there if they don't have a PP account.

Of course you can open an account without a receipt,but because OP purchased as a guest and now needs help with that purchase

then they need to go through the email they received in order to get the help they need as it has the transaction in it.

You would think that the details would be transfered once they opened an account?

But alternatively calling PayPal would be a good idea

If the OP uses the same details to open the account as they used to make the guest payment....same credit card, name and address etc...then the transaction IS automatically transferred into the account as I have said twice before. If there is any discrepency in the details then the transaction will not appear in the account and the OP needs to ring PP to have it done manually.

The OP does NOT need the receipt to open the PP account or to open the dispute as all the details will be in the PP account to allow the dispute to be opened. It may help to have the receipt so the OP can check what details they used, but it is not a necessity....it will not prevent them opening a PP account just because they don't have the receipt.

Sorry lyndal, but it is not a recent change - I've actually been posting this information on all relevant threads for the past several months.

The change was made around the same time that seller protection on guest payments was withdrawn, and that was quite a long time ago now, not long before PayPal had their fee rise from memory.

Digi, a friend of mine was able to open a PP account and transfer the guest payment into it about 6 weeks ago.....I just checked the dates on the emails we exchanged when I told her how to do it. It was late January/early February.

And I also took her to task for ignoring my advice in the first place and not opening her PP account before starting to purchase.

And a dispute was still able to be opened and/or escalated successfully*? Yes Digi, the dispute was opened, escalated and closed in the buyer's favour.....it was a straight forward INR dispute within Australia.

It really was as simple as you can get for a dispute....I would never have advocated a dispute over postage or anything else that may be a matter of interpretation.

Well... I guess all I can say to that is it would be nice if PayPal were more consistent with their policies and practices (or maybe at least more predictable. ), because as mentioned, according to current policies (quoted above) guest payments aren't eligible, and buyers in the past have been prevented from opening disputes after creating accounts (there's threads here confirming that, but they'd probably take a while to dig up).

Yes, it is hard to offer reliable and correct advice when members have different experiences with the same policies.

I must admit I don't understand why people want to use guest ebay or paypal accounts and I have no problems with the current policies.
