@countessalmirena wrote:

From the information I had, it seemed as though sellers were not aware of the eBay discount code, and also that sellers weren't paying any part of the discount.

The seller mentioned by the OP has the code and discount amount on every single one of their images, so it's very clear they are aware of it, and in advance because how else would they know to create and upload images with graphics that detail the discount and code (that's actually also asgainst eBay policy, at least for regular pleb sellers like myself - advertising "eBay" discount codes, I mean, either on images or in subtitles etc).

There's a shoe seller on here I've bought from a few times, and who also semi-regularly participates in these discount promotions. I bought the shoes I currently wear from them here on eBay. I saw recently, during one such 20% off promotion, that the brand and model I'm currently wearing was reduced to $50 (normally $200 - this wasn't a separate discount or sale, as such, either - they'd changed the regular BIN price). With 20% off, I figured I'd buy a couple of pairs and be set for a good few years. I added two pairs to my cart, then thought I'd go back and have a look at what else they had (because the brand itself was reduced from RRP quite significantly with a few other styles), didn't really find anything else I wanted and so went to checkout. But I couldn't, because the seller had withdrawn the item from sale (i.e. reduced the stock in the listing to 0, while i was looking at other things). I went back and did a search in their store for the brand name, and all but one or two styles were now showing, just the ones that weren't heavily reduced.

They would have no reason to do that during a discount promotion if eBay covered 100% of the discount. (I'm not saying their actions are wrong, BTW, that's very different from raising prices while a promo is running, and any seller has the right to withdraw an item from sale if they can't offer it at an advertised price, I'm just relating that to highlight that the discounts are facilitated, at least in part, by the sellers). I went to their website and bought them instead, since no matter which way you slice it, $50 for $200 shoes is a bargain.

Early last year, my son moved out and needed a fridge, so I figured that would be my housewarming gift to him, and did quite a bit of looking around online to get a good deal on one. I was looking at other online stores as well as eBay, and also put several fridges on my watch list in order to compare them. One of the sellers on the list is a well known electronic goods seller who particpates in lots of 20% off promotions, though one wasn't running at the time, and I didn't have the time to wait for one to be, however I ended up buying from them on eBay because eBay had a universal 5% off discount for any Aussie sellers, which made one from them the best, cheapest option.

I didn't take the fridges off my watch list afterwards, though, and noticed that the next time they were doing a "20% off" promo, the fridge I bought was, in fact, suddenly more expensive, and I wouldn't have saved much if I'd been in a position to wait for a bigger discount. I kept watching them, because my own fridge started having problems, and their prices do indeed fluctuate most... unusually.

Not all sellers do this, as you mentioned P o'K certainly doesn't and they regularly participate - their prices (at least on the things I'm interested in, like the Blunts ) aren't even inflated here, like some other sellers who also regularly participate will do. i.e. Their prices don't rise and fall in line with promos, but since people now know they'll offer the 20% discount sooner or later and so will typically wait for it before buying, their original prices on eBay are often high enough to absorb it.

Ebay started a spring promotion today with 20% savings. One hobby store increased all its prices by 10% and more yesterday and is now offering 20% off! What a joke what a rip off, they should be banned.

Your choice not to buy from that seller.

So let me get this straight they increased by 10% and offering 20% markdown so that's still 10% off and with eBay's promo that's 30% off in total. Still a substantial discount.

They raised their prices by 10% yesterday and eBay offers a 20% discount to the buyer today, so in effect, it's only a 10% discount from yesterday. I've spoken to a few people and I believe it's against eBay policy for sellers joining into these sales promotions to raise their prices and then offer a discount when they know the promotion is going to happen.

Maybe the seller was allready discounting their prices by 10%, so prices may have returned to normal for commencement of ebay

20% promo. Sellers change prices all the time and dont have to advise if price is reduced.. just seems that buyers often expect

that prices only move one way.

The prices in the two screenshots you've attached are the same, as gutterpunkz says.

If you are trying to prove that the seller raised their prices by 10% before you took a screenshot, then you need a screenshot showing that. By posting screenshots that don't show anything of the sort, you fail to prove your case.

In any event, just to clarify - it's eBay who gives the 20% discount to the buyer, not the seller. Perhaps the seller knew in advance about the 20% discount to be offered by eBay; perhaps they didn't.

You are confusing two different things.

This is not a promotion by the seller. Under Promotions Manager, a seller can set up special offers, and it is true that if a seller "changed the price of an item as part of a sale", s/he will "need to wait 7 days before including it as part of a new sale."

However, as I've said, this is NOT a promotion by the seller.

It's a 20% discount offered by eBay, on listings by quite a large number of "selected sellers". You can see which sellers eBay have selected here: https://pages2.ebay.com.au/Buyer_coupons/pollen

Two different things entirely.

Nothing about a rat, how about a whistle blower, Kogan did exactly the same thing with its eBay store and was fined 30,000 by the ACCC

"

News Corp Australia NetworkJANUARY 18, 201611:52AM

AUSTRALIAN online electronics store Kogan has been fined more than $30,000 for artificially inflating discounts in its Fathers’ Day sale last year, raising the price of items by more than 10 per cent before discounting them.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission detailed the company’s alleged deception today, revealing Kogan.com paid infringement notices related to computer monitors it sold from its eBay store in August last year.

“It is simply unacceptable for businesses to raise prices before applying a discount in order to give consumers the misleading impression that they are obtaining a larger percentage discount than is actually the case,” ACCC acting chair Dr Michael Schaper said.

“Truth in advertising and consumer issues in the online market place are both current enforcement priorities.”

And now we have "Australia's largest hobby store" ebay seller hobbywh doing the same. You should agree with the ACCC and be outraged

You dont seem to understand the difference between an ebay promo and an indivual ebayers sale/discount, two entirely

different things. Just the same as your Kogan example is completely different to an ebay promo, there is a big difference between

a legitimate whistle blower and a rat. I still smell a Rat

samagr_4, it's clear that you haven't taken in what's been said.

In the example you have given, Kogan both raised its prices and gave the discount (thus giving a misleading impression about the discount). That is against consumer legislation.

In this case, with the Lego seller, they did not give a discount. It is eBay offering a discount, and that has nothing to do with the prices of the seller. The seller can raise prices, lower prices, keep them the same - anything. They are not offering a discount. Quoting ACCC and asking for outrage is not appropriate in this instance.

Appolgies, not great on law but I do know that eBay does not allow merchants to raise prices a week before a sale, the hobby warehouse left it prices low all week and raised them yesterday, a day before the sale, not 7 days

See screen shot taken at 7:30 AM Monday, on the few you can see they've raised their prices around 10%
