Why does this occur?

I've just had an experience where an auction buyer outbid me, but he/she was 3 seconds late with the final and it went through to him/her.

Not good enough. If an auction finishes at 16:05, that's when the final bid take hold - not 3 seconds after!

So much for eBay's auctioning process. It will be may last attempt - EVER.

Sorry, but the winning bid was placed 26 seconds before the official end of the auction.

You may be upset at missing out but that is no reason to accuse ebay or the buyer of dirty tricks.

The auction ended at 16.05.29

The winner placed their bid at 16.05.03

You haven't considered the seconds, only the hour and minutes.

As the others have said you were outbid before the auction finished.

BUT you may well have won the auction if you had put your highest bid in during the last few seconds of the auction, instead of nibble-bidding against one other bidder. All nibble-bidding does is raise the selling price on auctions - not a sensible way to win auctions.

How right you are, enigmabear. Why on earth didn't the ebay rep point that out? I can only conclude they didn't even look. Extremely slack, they could have cleared it up for the OP in seconds.

Dark fox, the good news is there were no underhand dealings or strange things going on, you just missed seeing the seconds. It can be easy to misread the clock at first glance.

But what it comes down to is the fact that the other person won the auction fair & square. If you are disappointed because you would have bid more had you known, it would probably be worth putting in your top bid on any future auctions. It will only go up to that if it has to.
