Hi all

after someone wins a bid and i have sent an invoice, how long do i wait for the winner of the item to pay before i relist

You can open a non paying bidder dispute after 4 days and close it after 8 days. You will receive your final value fee back, the buyer will receive a strike against their account and they won't be able to leave feedback. If you receive negative feedback before then it will automatically be removed when the dispute is closed.

Hi, I usually wait 5 days, if they have not paid by then, I send a message thanking them for their purchase and requesting payment in the next couple of days, as I tell them my system automatically lodges non payment violations after seven days. ( Slight porky, I lodge them manually after seven days as some buyers request an extension of time to pay ). If they don't pay, the non payment dispute gets around 30%-40% into action. I close the disputes after four days and relist. I have found it is usually better to persist for a week or so with non payers, as the auctions are sometimes tarnished and lose interest if relisted. If relisting, I put a note on the auction, stating it is relisted due to non paying buyer, and also lodge the non payers on my blocked bidder list to stop them fiddling with future auctions. ( they can get grumpy with the non payment strike ) Hope this helps.

You have only sold 1 PICK UP ONLY item on the 27th May-did you consider calling the winner?

They obviously wouldn't be paying prior to picking up & then they would pay you cash.

Open a non payer dispute TODAY,wait 4 days,close & the non payer will be issued with a strike by ebay & you will receive a refund of your FVF.

It is NOT a good idea to put derogatory comments re 'listed due to non payer' in a listing as not only does it make the seller look vindictive & childish,it also serves no purpose whatsoever .

I would have to respectfully disagree with foxette re. adding comment "relisted due to non payment." Many buyers are cautious about items that appear to have sold and are then quickly relisted. They can be left wondering if the item was shill bidded up. This may not affect generic products which are all the same, but buyers are very cautious about bidding on rare one off expensive collectables that I sometimes sell on this account. Everyone to their own, only sharing my experiences in the hope of assisting others.

re. foxettes comments. The exact phrase I put on relisted auctions is "relisted due to non-payment. My appoligies for any inconvenience to other bidders." I don't feel this is comes across as childish, and alerts potential buyers as to the reason for item re appearing after seeming to be sold. This is particularly important if the item has had 15-20 bids from multiple parties and sold for hundreds of dollars. Yes there are still some auctions achieving this despite the gloom and doom often found on the forums.

May I respectfully suggest you make 2nd chance offers when that occurs ? I'm sure most people would be understanding of tyre kickers lol

From my experience, second chance offers are rarely accepted. Not sure if it's because the other bidders have lost interest, already moved onto another listing or because they are not quite trusting of a transaction that has fallen through (even if its not the seller's fault). Other sellers might be quite successful with second chance offers though...

I think the wording "relisted due to non-payment. My apologies for any inconvenience to other bidders." is a good way to word things, especially with the second sentence. It explains the situation but also says something about the seller being polite and serious about selling.

But as for payment time, I ask for payment within 5 days, and like other posters here suggest giving them a week/ I also give 2 friendly reminders along the way and inquiries as to whether everything is OK before telling them "Unfortunately if I don't receive communication by ___ date I will have to open an unpaid item dispute". This tells them you're not keen on escalating it but they will be forcing your hand.

Foxette re. second chance offers, by the time I have waited seven days for payment ( my own self imposed limit that works for me ) , lodged the non payment dispute and waited for outcome, the second chance option is long gone. As a previous poster has noted, I also find second chance offers are rarely accepted, with buyers being very wary of items that appear to have sold and then re-appear. Foxette is probably correct that relisting with comments about non payers may seem petty with a generic product such as an iphone, but I feel it is important to note with rare collectables that create a lot of interest. I guess we all have to develop our own business models based on what we sell. What works very well in one situation may be counter productive in another.

Otherwise people wonder why the heck the item is available again

after being sold, what is wrong with the item etc.

What it suggests on a pick up item is that a potential buyer has sighted the item and not though it worthy of the money they were planning to spend.

Regardless of personal thoughts and opinions you must open a NPB case and close it before re-listing if for no other reason than getting your FVF back.

Follow Foxy's advice, it is the best advice given. 🙂

I Agree on pick -ups it could be negative. Gets back to my previous point. Horses for courses. What works well in one situation may be counter productive in another. Also STRONGLY AGREE on need for all sellers to lodge NBPs for non payers AND ADJUST SETTINGS to block multiple non payers from bidding. It is the only weapon Ebay has provided sellers with to control "time wasting" non payers.

pinkee, my course of action on buyers is similar to already suggested -

ebay send an automatic reminder 2 days after purchase.

An unpaid item case can be opened 4 days after sale date.

I usually send a message at 5 days asking if there is a problem with payment.

If no response, I open an Unpaid Item Case and that can sometimes spur a response or payment.
If not, I close the case as soon as I can, 4 days after it's opened.
Final fees are returned, buyer gets a strike, I add them to my Block Bidders List and re-list the item.

And if it is a pick item, only cash after inspection. Then you can always pull their details and call them in advanced search, find contact info.

For posted items I wait until day 3 then send an invoice asking for details of their payment as I cannot locate it and their item is packed and ready to send. If they don't pay by the end of day 4 I open the dispute. They still have another 4 days.

Completely different if it is a pick up item. I contact them straight away giving them my phone number and if I don't hear from them by day 3 I ring them. Pick up arrangements are much better handled on the phone and as my buyers can only pay with cash if they are picking up they cannot pay with Paypal to avoid an unpaid item strike and then chargeback later if they don't want to continue with the sale.

honestly, until the buyer sees the invoice. sometimes people are away and i would think might not see until about after 24 hrs. i would message to see what's up. some people pay after a few days after. but i think if someone does that, they usually mention it in a message.
