Black Friday sales having huge effect?

This 4 day black Friday sales have had a huge impact on sales, only sold 3 games in 4 days and id normally average that a day, found many have gone out to shops to get 50% or more off at shops, i can't do a 50% off sale , just wont make money, i do 10% or 15% off every few months , just hope it picks up again as Christmas shopping is here and hope i get many Christmas shoppers,

Has anyone else had a big downturn over last 4 days?

Sorry, but I'm disliking this Black Friday Americanism here in Australia.

Black Friday here means when countless people have lost their lives in bushfires.

Not a time to run out and buy things on sale!

A bit slow, but I expected it. Even though I don't really compete with the stuff that is being discounted, there are only so many dollars to go around.

I know I will forgo wants if I can get unusual discounts on needs or other wants.

For my part I am sick and tired of Australian retailers jumping on anything American they think will boost their sales. Be it Halloween, Black Friday sales, etc.

Crass commercialism at its worst.

A US online clothing shop I often buy from had a Black Friday sale, a Cyber Monday one and I'm just wondering what's next. 25% off everything (even if already on sale) but when I included the GST and postage and converted it to Oz dollars it wasn't cheap enough for me to buy. I think I'll wait and see what they are doing for Christmas or just after it.

Here in the UK too, anything the US do we follow. Used to be the other way round lol. When you drill down there are very few things that are genuinely cheaper in total.

Those were my thoughts too. It's a very sinister sort of name although apparently it just means that on the day after Thanksgiving in US, the shops were 'in the black', so to speak, with sales.

I think we've lost the battle though to keep it out. I was away up in Albury with my sister and a friend and I could not believe it on Friday night, they were both on ipads & phones, busily shopping or looking at sales till-get this!! 1am in the morning.

Not I, equipped only with my trusty flip phone. I was trying to sleep.

Then I was talking to my husband on Sunday when I got back & he said the local shopping centres were packed, like Christmas. People fighting over car parks.

I did notice it was on all my internet sales sites in the days before, with special offers.

Was ebay running any sort of promotion?

That's actually a myth - the term was first used (in the US) in the '60s and, if memory serves, it was a phrase being used by local police to describe holiday traffic in LA. Retailers started using it about 20 years ago.

To answer the OP, I didn't run any sales, but I had a pretty massive weekend. This is my peak season though, and I don't sell the type of stuff you can get at any really well established, traditional retailers. I did have a look at what some of my larger competitors were doing, since they do have BFCM sales, but it was all pretty lacklustre from my perspective. All of the discounted stuff wasn't anything I would buy. Same goes for other retailers - most of them have the same kinds of sales consistently throughout the year, so there's really nothing about these sales that's special to me, and FOMO doesn't work on me anywhere near as well as it used to.

I bought packaging supplies at 20% off, and got around 10% off some craft supplies I was going to buy anyway.

Re: Australia using American traditions etc, we tried our own version and it failed miserably. I think marketing for BFCM sales works because we see so much media from the US that we (as in, Australians in general) can more easily accept it as an established event, and we're already hyper aware of the frenzy that sometimes accompanies it. (Anyone remember Click Frenzy? Massively hyped the first year it was run, then the site[s] crashed on the day, and the offerings weren't particularly exciting. I believe they still run it every year, but how many here hold out for it? I know i don't ) I do agree the use of the name here is in poor taste, though.

Yes it is having an effect on my sales... Was doing OK then Nada .... Anyone have pre Xmas rush?? Certainly not happening with my store this year! Wonder if there'll stiil be a Xmas rush?

I'm pretty happy with my sales level. International orders have dropped off a bit, as time is getting a bit short for arrival before Christmas, but domestic sales are keeping me busy.

Nope !! Had the whinge ... didnt change anything... Time to take action as it didnt do anything this time. Just dont know what action to take... Haa haa, but Im normally swimming in orders this time of year. VERY strange.

Yes.... Sales are still terrible for this time of year for me ... Did what Chameleon (I think it was them?) did& .. Rang up Evay & asked was there a problem with my visibility etc They checked it all out & said its normal ...must be a new kinda normal then cos last year I was very busy!!! Mind you my watch count has doubled tho. Maybe theyre all gonna buy in the next 3 weeks & at the last minute

crow333crow, I'm in a slightly zany and quirky mood (probably due to sleep deprivation as I have had to work crazily on a particular project for the last little while), so apologies in advance... I just could not resist replying to your comment about sales going through the roof.

I can't tell you how pleased I am to hear your sales are going through the roof. Especially given the issues you had. Given the issues with this ID, I am secretly hoping my suggestions may have helped you get selling again? 😄 I'd love to know the ID you are selling on because I bid so often on this account, but got outbid at the last minute.
