@dazzledayz wrote:

At 5.36 per (bulk rates), it almost makes sense to just use satchels via MyPost if you can get numbers up to a decent discount level.

You're not restricted to 20mm and insurance is via PayPal in the event of INR though I have no idea how that will work once eBay gets involved.

Unless the item is going to a "regional" location. I have found that since they brought in that rule (no discounts to regional areas, while offering a minutely higher discount to interstate metro areas, and a sizeably higher discount to same-state metro areas), that more than half of my parcels go to "regional" areas.

I'm at the highest tier discount, and pay $8.30 to regional locations, $6.97 to interstate metro, and $5.81 for local metro (regular postage, 500g prices) - add on the cost of satchels, printing labels, and packaging. (I stick with it because I still use it for sales where I have no access to discounted postage via eBay etc, and the odd international express parcel, so maintaing the discount is still worthwhile, but I will use a letter where I can).

The lower your postage costs, the lower the cut eBay gets for it, and the lower the margin you need to allow for it as well.

Plus, I also feel oddly satisfied that eBay pays for the postage on 5 orders per box.

I have to agree Digi; the change from Click & Send to MyPost Business tilted the playing field considerably.

With these differentials for "Rural" and "Other Major City" it makes AP more like a courier company, which is rather the idea I suppose.

Nowhere do they state what amounts to a major city either, so where do cities like Bathurst, Ballarat, Bendigo or Cairns and Caloundra fit into the scheme?

Also, what is the extent of each major city?

In Brisbane, the Q1 zone used for local postage runs north south but not very west.

It goes south to the border (Gold Coast) and north to Caboolture but omits Ispwich to the west which is closer than both.

Where I am placed, a suburb about 10km from me is considered "Rural" in the Q2 zone so I make a lot of use of the 50km interzone rate which involves manual assessment at my local PO.

So my question is, if you post to Redbank Qld (32km from CBD but a suburb of Ipswich), are you going to be charged "Rural" or "Other Major City" rates?

If you posted to Gold Coast (100km away but same city to me) would that be true for you or would it be "Rural" or "Other major"?

I've not been able to find a definitive postcode list from AP that sorts any of this out.

At least the courier companies usually publish one.

I just stopped using MyPost and went back to the eBay labels plus letters; I didn't need the headache.

Fear I have been a bit slow to realise that:

If I send more than 5 parcels a week over an 8 week, and purchase labels via the MyPost site, I can for example send a parcel between capital cities for $7.30.

The volume qualification bar is probably to high for me, as I only send 10 parcels in a good month, to continue using eBay labels with no possibility of a discount and which I can't use for non-eBay sales seems a bit silly.

Am I missing something?

I don't understand your question

If you don't send 5 parcels a week you don't qualify for Aust Post discounted parcels so the question is moot.

If you only send 10 parcels a month - the ebay labels are only $7.55 for 500g and have discounted postage for calculated. So they are the best.

You get no discount for 500g parcels normal or express.

Ebay Parcels are best for 1kg parcels standard postage. Discounted rate.

Also using BX4 Auspost boxes with eBay labels is the best value for money for 5K or under.

Beware above 2Kgs thats not BX though as eBay rates are actually more expensive than Auspost once you reach a certain cubic size.

Always compare them and you will be right.

But you have to buy the satchels from Australia Post. They are 15c each in lots of 20 or more.

The postage option you then select (once you have some satchels) is 'eBay 500g satchel'. Which you will be charged $7.55 for at the end of each billing month. So you don't even have to stump the money up up front.

I have also stumbled across something in Aus Post called ‘Domestic Letter with Tracking’.

It is a cardboard envelope A4 size – max weigh 500gr – max thickness 20mm. Cost = $5.20.

And it’s tracked with their own sticky label tracking number. Insurance and signature are options too.

Even cheaper is the DL-sized envelope which is for max weight 125 gr and 5mm thickness. Cost = $2.10.

Both say they are not suitable for sending small rigid items such as jewellery, keys, coins. But I have, via careful packing so as the whole parcel is the same dimensions as the envelope without any lumpiness.

It was being trialled in a few POs, but even so you could purchase on-line and use anywhere. The trial was a success and it was being extended nation-wide – I think I last heard.

I used about 30 tracked small letters since the start of the year.

70% of them had no tracking for delivery. They were only good for proving that you lodge the letter at the post office.

All the letters sent to Victoria (from NSW) had no delivery tracking.

All the letters sent to QLD (from NSW) had delviery tracking.

I spoke to Auspost about it and they said the small letters wont be available anymore as not enough people used them.

Looks like the large letters will be but they arent cost effiective.

I can see how you like it but I now have my reasons based off my experiance

In your example $5 tracked letter vs $7 satchel (bulk buy)

Yes its around $2 less but to many negatives

With Satchel you dont have the size constraints and the need for it to be flexible. It wont get stuck in mail sorting conveyor and be lost for a week when it jams somehere. Pacels are nearly always tracked on delviery because a driver is delivering them and not the mail person.

The tracked letters have been a nightmare for tracking and I forgot to mention Auspost lost 3 of them out of the 30 I posted. In 20 years of sending tracked parcels I have never lost one.

On the flip side, I've gone through over 200 of the large tracked letters, and I have only had one issue so far (buyer said it wasn't delivered despite being marked as delivered, it was kind of an iffy case though, TBH). Most of my delivery issues over the years have been with tracked parcels (late express deliveries, delivered to the wrong address, MIA for a couple of weeks, etc).

I think the tracked large letters are excellent value for items that can be sent in them (even with the recent price increase), if only for the fact that by comparison, a 250-500g untracked large letter is $5 with nothing but delivery included. If you then want to add tracking to a large letter of that weight, you have to pay over $4 to get it, and the only thing that extra gets you that the pre-paid tracked envelopes don't, is signature on delivery (which many people find annoying, anyway). So, for roughly the same price, you get tracking and insurance (on that note, compensation may be payable - up to $100 - on any undelivered letters). For smaller weights, I still feel the value is there, because to pay for registered on a <125g letter, the cost would still be over $6. (I actually buy the tracked envelopes on eBay, when a 10% code can be applied).

To get $100 insurance on a parcel, you have to add $1.50, so to compare the costs of the services, you'd need to compare them with $100 insurance included (though, many sellers can get discounts on this through My Post Business, eg a 500g satchel with $100 insurance, to an interstate metro location, would cost me $7.97, and I use priority on every letter I send so the cost for one for me is 50c higher than those who don't use priority - currently, with the last lot of envelopes I bought, one costs me $4.84 to send via priority, so over a $3 difference there, and about a $2.50 saving when I have to pay the new price).

Only small letters are required to be flexible, so this isn't a consideration for the large letters (they are made from rigid card themselves, and should not be going through sorting machines). They aren't suitable for everything, of course, and I still put my items in a bubble mailer before putting the items in the tracked envelope (unsealed, so it can at least be re-used by the buyer 🙂 ), anything I use the flat box mailers to send as a letter, can't go in a tracked letter as that will take them over the 2cm restriction.

The only thing I wish is that they had a C5 large letter option. The large ones are overkill for some items, and don't fit in to a lot of letterboxes.
