Excess postage costs

I am relatively new to Ebay and have had a great experience so far. I have found that the postage calculator has worked really well generally, with the postage being exactly what was estimated with most items sent. But I have had 2 transactions, one which cost me way over my estimate, but I figured it was my fault, learn and move on, but the other was overestimated, the buyer paid $6.95 but the actual charge was $2.80. It was strange (this was a book) as all the other books worked out exactly right. My question is: should I refund the $4? Is this something buyers expect? I have read through a few posts and most people are saying that when you state postage and they still purchase the item, then it's their choice, I guess I feel you shouldn't make money on postage? I would appreciate some of your thoughts. Thanks.

Yes, I would. It was a genuine mistake and you are not out of pocket. You can refund direct from Paypal with an explanatory note to your buyer. Good PR I think.

The problem occurs because ebay does not take into account large letters, which are cheaper to post. It would set it at the base parcel price of $6.95. Your best bet one these smaller items that are sent a sa large letter is to eneter the postage rather than using the calculator.

I usually refund anything over about $2.00. Most buyers are appreciative of it as these days every bit helps.

If we talking about $4, you can call it handling fee. If you charge it of course. If for some reason you are so kind that you are happy to pack and spend time on lodging it for free then refund it.

The other option is to actually know what your items cost to post. That bit about being a responsilbe seller? Being fair dinkum? Translations available.
