quick word of warning, just received an email from "paypal" correct name and email encouraging me to buy despite my "0" balance, don't think so! even had a link in the email.

Did it look like this:

Subject: Hi (name removed) your PayPal balance summary is here. Plus grab a great Christmas deal from Westfield

Your Email (removed) Date as of 03 December 2012 Hi (name removed),Your current balance is zero. But that doesn't mean you can't use PayPal, as you don't need a balance to shop with us. Instead when you checkout we will draw from your selected funding source.

You can check your balance anytime by logging into your account at paypal.com.au

If so I'm pretty sure those are legit.. It's not so much encouraging you to buy, but telling you that just because you have no money in PayPal, it doesn't mean that you can't shop

Those are perfectly legit. I have been getting them regularly for the last year and nothing diabolical has happened.

Their response:

edda, if it is the email from paypal telling you that you can still shop using paypal even if you have a 0 balance then it IS from paypal.

I never keep any money in my paypal account and I get these on a regular basis.

It is a known fact that when you forward emails to spoof@paypal/ebay you will get a reply that often is wrong.

Use your own judgement as to whether you take notice of these emails but always follow the golden rule....NEVER log into your accounts (ebay or paypal) from a link in an email. At least that way you are not giving any information to a scammer.

I am currently receiving emails to the effect that I have subscribed to some service to the value of GBP178.00. I haven't, but paypal assures me that the email is genuine....go figure.
