Just looking for an item today and get to the auction and directly under the Seller Information is a bright flashing ad

CONGRATULATIONS THIS IS NOT A JOKE! YOU ARE THE 100,000TH VISITOR! CLICK HERE

Not exactly the luckiest person around so I doubt that I was the 100,000 visitor. Surely this is false advertising, and probably illegal, if not should be. The link takes you to a competition that you need to ring to subscribe and are then charged $5/msg received from them, 3 msgs/week +$5 sign up. And if you get enough points you can win an Apple prize. If you actually got lucky pretty sure you would find the prize really was an Apple ( the fruit) rather than Apple the computer. And the flashing ad is just awful and hurts the eyes, sure way to drive potential customers away from your auction if not cause a seizure.

Ebay are all over sellers for all sorts of minor infringements, duplicate items, etc not forgetting Keyword spamming, the list goes on, but they allow something like this in their AdChoices.

You are the 100,000th visitor of this thread. Click here ]:) to redeem your prize. I also have a $100,000,000 in a trust account I need moving o/s if anyboby is interested giving me the details of their bank account details and pw.

This is not ebay advertising, it is most likely the result of malware/adware you could have picked up from somewhere...

You might want to do a virus/spyware scan

If it isn't, you have the facilities to block this advertising if you use Firefox or Chrome; you can get an AdBlock Plus add on that blocks all ads

Get Ad-Block Plus or similar free programs that will prevent Pop-ups or these kind of ads .

Run a virus and Malware scan as you could have picked up something when downloading things from the net.

Sorry this was not malware or a popup it was an eBay adChoice ( it had the AdChoice logo under it) It was one of the ads directly under the seller information not a pop up. Thats why I was annoyed. There are all sort of ads in that position even ones for the rival auction site, which is fair enough, but there shouldn't be ones with false advertising.

I understand I can block it if I wish, that not the point. eBay should be controlling what ads are on its site.

It could still be Adware.. Adchoice still comes under the category of AdWare

The type of spam in the picture usually happens when you visit certain sites, the scam is that you fill out a survey or some other thing which gives the scammers your details so they can send you targeted advertising.

There are so many sites that get some of their revenue from those types of advertisements that I can do my own Ad Blocking, it doesn't matter how many flashes, bells and whistles they have I just don't notice them anymore. At least with ebay they are always in the same place so you can very easily choose not to look and if the companies are prepared to pay ebay thus keeping my fees down then good on 'em!

Aren't these the ads that bring the nasties onto your computer?

It's all very well to have the latest Ad Blockers, virus scan etc on your computer - but can you guarantee that every single one of your customers will also be up-to-date?

These are the sorts of ads that you see on free sites, obviously help fund them. Something that ebay most definitely isn't!

Do Australian Laws regarding false advertising apply to online ads? Because it is most certainly false when you visit the same site 6 times in one day to find that you are the 100,000 visitor of that site all 6 times.

What gets me is when you Search an item, there are similar items listed above the item you're looking on. When you click on them, it takes you to another web site altogether. Not even being offered on ebay. Don't get that line of thinking I'm afraid.
