my new email address eBay say's is already in use, how do I find out how that happened ?

Usually this happens when people created an eBay account with an email address in the past and then forget about it, so when they try to create a new eBay account with that email address again (or when they try to change the email address in their current account to that email address), they receive the error message you received. Multiple eBay accounts are allowed, but they must all be associated with a different email address.

It's been seen that at least one company "recycles" their email addresses (Yahoo) there may be others that do it as well. Possibly this has happened to the OP.

Most commonly, a new eBay account is created when a user signs in using a social media account associated with the email address for the first time.

I think I have Yahoo email addresses I haven't used in a long time, but I could always log in, although they had been deactivated and all emails had gone. I don't know for sure for how long I had not logged in though. I will certainly try to log in more often, as I don't really like the idea of recycled email addresses...

Maybe I could log in even if my account had been deactivated because nobody had tried to create a new Yahoo account with my username...

Well that is quite likely, I did sign in a few times with Facebook, but yesterday I changed my Password and I logged in using that new PW, then attempted to change the eMail and that's when it said eMail already taken, so I am at a loss as to how to get rid of my old one then add the newer one...
