Question Suspected scam: buyer asking to split payments using afterpay in Selling on eBay

I first received a message from this buyer saying:

"Hey. I got Afterpay with $600 on it U wanna change price to $600 And I'll bank trans the rest?"

I replied I only accept payments through ebay.

Then he said:

"Okay change price to $600

Then make another add for $400 I'll buy both through eBay no

problem" "I won't even negotiate"

It sounded a bit sus, but I have still decided to go ahead. So I have split my listing in to two, but I have make sure I mentioned clearly that there are two separate payments for this buyer only, and item won't be sent unless two payments has been received.

Once I have created two separate listings, I asked him to pay now, but no payments made after 20mins. Then he said:

"Having technical difficulty's. change it back. We'll do it tmr. I have to reset my password"

Then I said I'll delete the listing now. He quickly replied:

"Sorry about that!! Just change price back on original

Leave the second one for $400 tho"

I then changed everything back to original and told him to contact eBay to help him make the split payment. He did not reply after that.

I suspect this is another way scammers are trying to scam from us.

Just wanted to share this in case other sellers received something similar.

Correct me if I'm wrong. Thanks ppl

It’s a scam. Items paid for in staggered amounts, or splitting payment between two

or more different payment methods (other than using one of the eligible payment methods that allow the buyer to pay in split amounts – such as Afterpay, Zip, or PayPal Pay in 4) are not covered.

You’d almost certainly have received faked-up receipts designed to look like bank-issued confirmations of payment outside the eBay system. Probably the same thing em would apply to the Afterpay “portion”.

Don't agree to any such request in future. Block any so-called buyer requesting it.
