change of email address needed, but my new address is apparently registered with eBay?

Order confirmations are sent to an email address to which I am not connected (retired - was using a work email). When I try to enter my gmail address, I'm told it is already registered with eBay. I have no details on that and wish to cancel that account to get my gmail address registered with eBay.

OP, if you have previously logged in using social media, and that particular social media account is connected to the gmail address in question, then you have in the past created a new eBay account with that email address.

    https://www.ebay.com.au/help/account/signing-account/signing-account?id=4189

    https://www.ebay.com.au/help/account/signing-ebay-account/signing-ebay-account?id=4191

Try logging in with the gmail address, and click onto “Forgot password”. You should receive the link to reset the password - and thus be able to log in.

However, if what you’re actually asking is to meld the two different accounts together… you can’t (as far as I’m aware).

Had you logged into your old account and changed the password therein - while you still had access to your old email address so that you could receive any notifications relevant to updating the email address (and of course not logging in via any method with the new email address) - then it would have been simple. The existing (old) account would have a new email account attached to it, and no separate account would have been created.

But what you have described indicates that somehow you HAVE created an eBay account with your gmail address…

The only other possibility would be that the gmail address is quite new, and that it became available for reuse after years of inactivity, and that its previous owner had an eBay account attached to it. Possible but stretching the bounds of what is likely …

Anyway, give it some thought. If there’s any possibility that you may have logged in via the social media method (see the first link), then you’ll have created a new account with the attached gmail address if you did use that address with Facebook, Apple or Google.

Not unlikely - my preferred email address had been inactive for years, but I still couldn't use it.

Get a new email address. That's the easiest way.

Do not give out your email address on a public forum

There is a very clear, highlighted banner telling everyone who posts not to give out personal details when posting

You have just given every scammer, anywhere in the world your email address

This is a public page visible to everyone and anyone

Not one legitimate person is going to email you

Anyone who does email you will be a scammer, who will share your email address with other scammers

Other members cannot cancel that account for you

If you did  not use that email address for eBay in the past, you will want to take action by contacting eBay and letting them know someone you did not authorise is using your email address
