Dodgy sellers saying item is in Aus

I have noticed a large number of sellers with Australian flags and Australia post symbols marketing themselves as being local. They also say it in their profile. Generally these items are more expensive due to the seller already purchasing and then postage is quicker. However, I have noticed that many sellers are based overseas and order the item from China or where ever else when the buyer purchases. They register the tracking number and mark the item as sent. But the item doesn’t actually enter the post for two weeks. This is misleading to the consumer and I believe goes again consumer law. It also undermines genuine Australian sellers.
I generally only buy from high feedback, but it’s otherwise impossible to tell when they are local or not.
eBay should be doing more to prevent these practices.

·3 years agoIt would be great if, in the actual body of the ad, ebay displayed not only item location but seller location.
But they don't. I doubt they ever will either, or not in the near future.
There are ways to check seller lcoation though, it isn't impossible.
Click on their ID name and you should see some clickable headings (shop, about, feedback).
Click on the 'about' tab and that will show you where the seller is registered.
With the 'feedback' tab. scroll to the end and click on 'show all feedback'.
It doesn't matter how many aussie flags are waved in ads, the seller lcoation will tell you what you need to know.
As for the rest, there is nothing wrong with buying from someone overseas as long as you know the score, not all Chinese sellers are bad by any means. Just check the estimated arrival dates and don't worry till those dates have passed, then if an item still has not arrived, you can open a claim.

You have all the information clearly available to you, should you choose to look
The feedback page shows where they are registered
The feedback tells you if they lie about where items are posted from
The 'high feedback' alone tells you nothing on it's own
If your seller is drop shipping and they don't mention it in the listing, report them

OP3 years agoThey all show that they are based in Australia and have images of Australian flags to suggest it as well. The section in ‘About’, under ‘Feedback’ always lists them as being in Australia. There is no way to tell until you purchase. It’s so widespread it’s impossible to tell.

Check the feedback before you buy
One of the sellers who recently left you feedback very clearly shows they are registered in China and they have terrible feedback
What the listing says, having a photo of the Australian flag means very little
'Where they seller says the item is located' and where the seller is registered are two different things
The estimated delivery date is also a dead giveaway if you can't be bothered checking a seller's feedback first

·3 years agoI use the fact they have all those things showing like flags and Aust Post symbol to warn me it is likely an overseas seller. Plus the generic listing layout they all use and to allow for 1-5mm size difference and monitor colour variations.

·3 years agoCheck the estimated delivery date, if its more than about a week (guestimate), especially in the 2 to 3 week span, its coming from overseas. Don't buy.

·3 years agoIf they have the Australian flag and AU Post, 95% of the time, they will be a Chinese seller. They may be registered in Australia, but they will be Chinese. They are notorious for flashing the flag around to convince people they are local.
As mentioned, check the FEEDBACK page, not the location in the listing, to see where the seller is REGISTERED. I can put in my listings that my items are in Iceland, while I'm in NSW. A seller can put any location they like. Under their feedback score on the FEEDBACK page, will show where they are registered. That's what you need to look at.
