does eBay follow up reports of counterfeit items?

As most people know, there are many fake designer bags on eBay. I recently contacted a seller advising that the Chanel bag she had listed was a fake and that the serial number on the 'authenticity card' was a known and documentted fake serial number. Google 10218184 will verify this.
The seller did not reply, but ended the auction even though it still had just over 2 days to run, and sold the bag to the highest bidder for $2,000. An admission of guilt?
The sale of counterfeit items is a criminal offence. I feel for the buyer; some just don't realise there are people out there that will take advantage of their ignorance.
Right after I contacted the seller, I also reported the item to eBay.
I cannot identify the seller here, obviously, and sincerely hope that eBay will contact the seller and refund the money to the buyer. I won't be holding my breath however. But, you never know, has anyone ever received a reply from eBay after reporting a seller for acting against eBay policy?

Thanks again for reporting the listing(s) you found.
What happened:
We looked into your report and didn’t find the listing to be in violation of our policy. This determination was made using automation or artificial intelligence.
If you reported content that isn’t listed below, we’ll send a separate email once we’ve made a decision.
So they won't take any action because they are using STUPID AI or some Stupid ignorant Staff who don't bother to investigate it. Or deliberately ignore it because they are making a lot of money by those fakes and dont care about it. Its a sham. I have reported so many times and I hate ebay for this. And also hate the chinese sellers who are the majority of counterfeiters on ebay. I have half a mind to report to Australian Border Security force and other watch dogs as I am losing a lot of money to these criminals as I cannot sell the original licensed as they are higher priced than the fakes. Its infuriating and frustrating, its really very very bad on ebay to do nothing.

·1 year agoI doubt coco jakson will get to see your post or is even an active member of ebay any longer as this is a pretty old post.
I feel your pain over the knock off products though. All I could suggest is you write something in your ads, to the effect that your item is the original, licensed item and buyers should beware of cheaper fake items like these, especially ones that may be sold from overseas.
You probably can't be too specific but that might at least alert some buyers to the possible problem and make them wary.

·10 years agoEbay will quite rightly rarely take the word of another member that a listed item is counterfeit, if they did then sellers could just report their competitors and it would end up with nothing for sale. They will act if a buyer can provide proof an item is counterfeit and they will also act if the rights owner, in this case Chanel, report the listing if they are a VERO member.
The buyer also has the option of reporting the fake item to Chanel and the authorities as the seller has broken the law by selling a counterfeit product.

OP10 years agoThanks for your comment. I wouldn't ask or expect eBay to take my word on it. I included verifiable info to substantiate my claim. With respect, I don't think eBay would 'end up with nothing for sale'; that is conjecture and suggests the majority of sellers are unscrupulous and eBay incapable of discrimination.

·1 year agoHI There is an area which allows you to include that proof when you report but it doesn't work, its a scam - ebay asking as if they care. They generally return a reply saying that what you reported was not a violation etc without bothering to look into the matter or investigate it. It has happened a zillion times to me so now I know they dont care at all. They encourage fakes by not taking anything seriously. Sad state of affairs.

Report listings for listing violations -- violations that can be checked by someone without needing to examine the object in person, like encouraging off-eBay sales, or including contact information, or demanding non-approved payment methods, or selling contraband items.
Counterfeit item listings can challenged by the original rights owner through VeRO take-downs.
Buyers that receive something other than what was described have recourse through eBay's money back guarantee.
Even if you are a knowledgeable expert in your field, eBay is unlikely to simply take your word that a listing is for a counterfeit item unless you are the buyer or the rights owner. And eBay is not likely to investigate further unless a buyer or rights owner complains.
Buyers should not assume that eBay listings have been vetted by eBay, as eBay never sees what the seller ships or the buyer receives, other than for some specific categories that qualify for authentication after purchase. Buyers should choose to deal with experienced sellers they trust, or be prepared to get items checked quickly enough to be able to take advantage of eBay's money back guarantee.

·1 year agothat is not the point. Its not wise to buy expensive branded items like these from a site like ebay which has a lot of counterfeited goods. However just because people are naive, they should not be taken advantage of. Sorry.
