Faulty Item and seller strung me along until return window closed.

I purchased a power steering pump and it was faulty.

I made contact with the seller and they strung me along with requests for information and video evidence just long enough for the return time frame to run out and now no contact.

    Be Warned when buying parts.

The seller is in China and has 99% feedback, which most ebay buyers would not consider bad feedback.

However, you have a feedback score of 215 and you have been on ebay for yearsso it would be worth your while to get familiar with how it works if you have trouble like this.

Maybe you have never struck many problems, although I did look at your feedback given to others and I could be wrong, but it looks as if when there is a problem, you chase up the seller.

It is fine to contact a seller as first port of call but if they don't resolve it within 48 hours, don't contact again, don't chase it up, go through ebay to resolve. You don't need seller permission, you just do it on your own. Open a claim.

Resolving does not mean that the seller says they will send another one or that the seller delays after you send photos or video. Or that they say they will refund you.

It means you get a full refund within 48 hours of supplying info or videos.

Have a think about this. You bought from a seller in China. They may well have items in a warehouse here. I think they probably have.

But it means that for a faulty item, they would be up for return postage & they are trying to avoid that if they can.

So if you get a faulty item, just go through ebay and claim item not as described. That way, the seller is answerable to ebay. You must open an ebay claim within 30 days of receiving it though.

If you paid by paypal, go through that for a refund. If via bank, see about a charge back. If those don't work,

I did notice that in some of the seller's ads, they have a notice that said returns are accepted for 60 days, buyer to pay return postage. I presume that is for change of mind returns.

You could try returning it with a note of your problems & saying it was faulty from the start, but there is a chance they could ignore that too, so throwing good money after bad.

So you posted on your other thread

Why did you allow the seller to string you along?

You had all the power and the tools to get your money back and chose not to use them

Plus, as has been said, you bought from a dodgy seller registered in China with horrid feedback

    All avoidable

Did you not read the Money Back Guarantee policy page?

    https://www.ebay.com.au/help/policies/ebay-money-back-guarantee-policy/ebay-money-back-guarantee-policy?id=4210

You as the buyer have all the power. A seller can only string you along if you don’t follow the MBG steps as explained in that page. But let’s see if you can still get a refund through other means.

Did you pay through PayPal? If so, you are covered - with timeframe up to 180 days from the date of the actual transaction.

If you didn’t pay through PayPal, then you could still be covered by your bank/card issuer if you funded your transaction with a credit or debit card. Timeframes vary considerably for chargebacks being able to be performed; it may be as little as 1 month or as much as 6 months depending on the bank and the specific card. Mostly it seems to be roughly 2 or 3 months but you should check your card’s T&Cs.

A chargeback is your last resort. Do not try it before a PayPal claim (if you’re covered by PayPal), and do not try either PayPal or chargeback before an eBay claim under the MBG (when you’re still covered by the MBG )… for future reference. This is because you cannot open a PayPal or eBay claim if you’ve tried and failed with a chargeback… and it also seems that an unsuccessful PayPal claim may mean you can’t open a Money Back Guarantee claim - but the other way is fine.

One final point: you don’t ever need to dilly-dally with a seller. Open dispute, seller to provide return postage label, you send back the item. If a seller doesn’t accept the return for Not As Described and doesn’t provide the label, you wait only for 3 business days until the option to ask eBay to step in - and then you select that option. No arguing, no delaying - just straightforward within the dispute.

If - once you have received the label, and you’ve returned the item with tracking showing delivery status of “delivered” - the seller doesn’t refund you, that’s another situation where you’d ask eBay to step in.

If the seller doesn’t resolve the issue within the timeframe of the MBG, you’ll almost certainly be refunded by eBay, and eBay will take their own measures to recover the money from the seller.

It is straightforward. Follow the steps to the letter if you ever need to open a MBG claim in future.

And please post here if you manage to get a refund through either PayPal or a chargeback. It encouraged other buyers posting / reading here after a similar situation when they see a successful outcome.
