I was Sold fake goods but keep getting the runnaround
Summary: lord_pr4 expressed frustration over being sold counterfeit goods and receiving poor customer service, experiencing evasive and unhelpful responses from the seller. davewil1964 and others engaged in the discussion, contributing their thoughts or experiences but no resolution was reached. It seems several participants related to the difficulties with accountability and quality regarding purchases from unreliable vendors.
I was sold a fake DVD box set by a seller who refuses to respond to messages. I keep trying to start a return but the automated responses say there is no such transaction despite it appearing in my history. The automated assistant can't seem to handle plain English sentences and seems designed to make me give up. No wonder they call it "evilbay"

·8 months agoI often buy items from the sixites and seventies. If an item has UPC barcode, it's most likely a later reprint.

·8 months agoI thought this 'may' have been a more recent transaction (but still out of time ) and that the OP had happily purchased from the seller before.
If it's the 'only' time the OP's dealt with the seller and it's a complaint about a dvd purchased more than 6 months ago, because the OP 'saw something on youtube' then I can almost guarantee the seller's blocked the OP

·8 months agoI don't know who you bought from but I do know this much-if something is wrong with a purchase or if it doesn't arrive, you should not need to chat to the automated assistant. Mind you, if you do, you can eventually proceed on to a real ebay person and they may have been able to guide you.
Most things on ebay are very automated & that includes opening a dispute for a refund.
Just a click or two and you can open it yourself, no need to talk to the seller or the automated chat.
But as dave said, you absolutely must do this within 30 days of receiving your item. It is sounding to me as if your window to do this may have passed.
If you ever strike a problem on ebay, it is always worthwhile going to the help pages to read the guide as to how to proceed. Never let things drag on.
Your seller is showing poor form if they won't even respond to a message. You can leave appropriate feedback, you get 2 months on which to do that.

·8 months agoWho calls it evilbay?
No reason you could not open a not as described dispute if what you were sent is not what was listed, and if you are within the time limit to do so

·8 months agoWhy do you think it's a fake ?
The seller's been registered since 2013 and has sold 17k items.
Have you checked the region on the DVD and are you using a multi region player ?

OP8 months agoThere is a video on Youtube that details the difference between a genuine version and a fake. Mine is a fake.

Ahhh! It's on the internet so it must be true.

·8 months agoNo doubt the youtube video was made by someone else who has no idea of eBay policy and expects special treatment above and beyond the tools every buyer has to get a refund if something is not as described
Go to your local police station and notify them you have purchased pirated dvds
davewil1964
·8 months agoYou only have 30 days from date of receipt to open a dispute. Have you timed out?
Probably yes.
For future reference don't let sellers stall you. By all means contact them in the first instance, but no or obfuscating responses mean you should proceed immediately to a dispute.
Also, naming and shaming is explicitly forbidden in the board rules which you agreed to before you posted.

Ebay protects bad actors.
davewil1964
·8 months agoeBay has rules about posting on the boards, which you explicitly agree to when you post.
And we only have your word about them being a bad actor. In addition to you not knowing how the MBG works.
eBay is seriously buyer-centric, but they expect buyers to at least know how the site works. Given you have been a member for over 5 years, I would also expect that.

·8 months agoUnfortunately, eBay can't protect buyers from themselves.
In this instance, the item images alone were enough to discourage anyone from opening the seller's listings... stock photos, Australian flag, etc. (red flag #1).
But the OP figuired it was best to ignore that and open the listing anyway. The first thing they would have seen is the Region 1 images on the Region 4 listing (red flag #2). Then they would have seen the location which indicates an extremely high probability of Asian involvement on some level... quite possibly the type associated with pirated Chinese imports (red flag #3).
For some reason they thought it best to ignore that too. There's also the payment details about accepting PayPal or bank deposit (red flag #4).
The seller's feedback shows a high number of neutrals/negs for fake/counterfeit/pirated DVDs (red flag #5)... not to mention all of the complaints about slow shipping (red flag #6), poor packaging (red flag #7), damage in transit (red flag #8), poor communication (red flag #9), ghosting buyers (red flag #10), incorrect item received (red flag #11) etc., they would have seen a very clear recurring pattern (red flag #12).
Yet for some unknown reason, they chose to ignore all of the warning signs and continued on to buy the junk anyway. The number of people who do just this beggars belief.

·8 months ago* Note my intention is not to argue with you and the following is JMO
I appreciate you're a DVD seller yourself so are able to mention all the reasons why you think the OP shouldn't have purchased from the seller BUT here's a few reasons why I think the OP / inexperienced / average buyers may go ahead
The seller's been registered in AU since 2013 and has sold 17K items dvds - feedback score (5866)
"In this instance stock photos, Australian flag, etc"
Inexperienced / average buyers have no idea that stock photos may be a warning and would presume the flag indicates it's an Australian seller posting from Australia
"Then they would have seen the location which indicates an extremely high probability of Asian involvement on some level... quite possibly the type associated with pirated Chinese imports"
I doubt anyone living outside of NSW would have any idea that Ultimo indicates a high probability of Asian involvement
"There's also the payment details about accepting PayPal or bank deposit"
Buyers pay through checkout and generally have zero knowledge of what "used to be"
"The seller's feedback shows a high number of neutrals/negs for fake/counterfeit/pirated DVDs"
If buyers aren't scrutinising ALL of the 5866 feedback , the few comments about fakes are lost amongst the thousands of positive feedback
and maybe most important of all, the OP's transaction may be over 30 days but I doubt it's much longer.
The OP's happily dealt with the seller in the past and left positive feedback

·8 months agoI can probably rule out another one.
"ghosting buyers"
If a seller's confronted with a buyer who claims a dvd is fake , there's a good chance the seller may block them
and as stated in another thread:
lezned-toycollector
There's an extremely high probability that as well as being blocked, the seller is not receiving any messages from you. If this is the case (and I strongly suspect it is) they would have no idea that you're messaging. Instead of receiving "many messages" as you imply, they would have actually received "many nothings" from you.
