❝If you purchase a number of low value imported goods from a supplier with a total customs value of more than A$1,000 and the goods are sent to you in one parcel, the supplier can choose to either:
apply GST to each low value good at the point of sale and include sufficient information on the import documents to prevent GST being applied again at the border
not apply GST at the point of sale and allow GST to be applied to the parcel at the Australian border.
You may also need to pay any customs duty and clearance charges applicable at the border.
The supplier must issue you a notice or receipt that includes:
their GST registration number, either an Australian business number (ABN) or ATO reference number (ARN)
if you have paid GST at the point of sale.
This will provide the information required to complete an import declaration.❞
The GST and collection fee % rate, is about on par with that applied to imports over $1000,
But since the GH Tax, those same charges are now applied to all imports where the shipping company is required to collect the GST and remit to the ATO.
Why should foreign companys be required to collect and process Australian GST free of charge.
That's another question. If I buy something for $1100, do I pay GST on the whole amount or just on the $100? One would hope the latter, but perhaps not.
Then I say to you, my fellow Australians, my fellow ebayers, let us rise up as one and throw over those who would tax us! Taxation is theft, as a wise man once said.
That's another question. If I buy something for $1100, do I pay GST on the whole amount or just on the $100? One would hope the latter, but perhaps not.
Get real, you will be charged GST on the full $1100, GST will be applied at the border plus you will be charged 20% + by the shipping agent, I don't think I have ever gotten away with less than 25% at the border for items over $1000
Learn how to import goods, or don't buy from overseas
You need to look at the bigger picture, domino old boy. What kind of company are ebay if they allow this sort of thing?
you need to look at the legislation and figure out best options for importing.
Here is an example from ATO, that virtually covers the GSP scenario.
Jia wants to purchase a coat for A$200 from Clancy's, a store in the United States. Clancy's does not ship its products to Australia.
Jia contacts Take-it-Home Co to help her bring the coat to Australia. Take-it-Home Co gives her an address in the United States. Jia buys the coat from Clancy's, which ships the coat to this United States address. Take-it-Home Co then arranges for the coat to be shipped to Australia.
Take-it-Home Co is registered for GST and charges Jia A$44, including A$4 GST, for the services it provided to bring the goods to Australia. It also charges Jia A$20 in GST on the coat, which is 10% of the amount Jia paid to Clancy's.
I can't help thinking this is a scam. They pay the gov the required tax (10%) but keep the rest for themselves. And there's nothing I can do about it. When I inquire they send me round in a circle.
It sounds like GST is being collected by the shipping company rather than ebay. Ebay only charges GST 10% with no additional charges.
Shipping companies that are required to collect GST for LVI, charge the 10% GST, plus they are entitled to charge any amount they like, for doing so, with the additional charges normally being listed as duties.
I see. Well, I think people should be aware that they are charging a lot more than they have to give to the Aussie gov (10% on items more than $1000). What exactly have they done to earn that extra amount?
If it is being shipped via GSP, GSP is responsible for collecting and remitting the GST, on top of the GST they can also set any fee they like for collecting GST, and now for the kicker, you are then required to GST on the collection fee. Thanks Gerry

For “may”, read “will” in this case, because there are extremely limited exceptions that don’t apply to your purchase.

·2 years ago' Old boy ' - ' old girl ' will do nicely.
This is the last thing I purchased on eBay - less than $19 - doesn't even need batteries.
Not coming from China either.
If I'd want to spend 4 figures I'd head off to the source.

Edit. And they send the import taxes to the Australian Government.
