·1 year agoYou have 30 days from the delivery date to open a return and refund case under eBay’s Money Back Guarantee.
You must escalate the case after 4 days if seller doesn’t
1) refund you within 4 days of opening the case, or
2) agree to refund you (within the case - a message outside the case is not the correct way) upon return of the item, and provide you with a return postage label (within the case) … which you would use to return the item by the date specified in the message you receive automatically by eBay in your eBay messages.
If seller refunds you without requiring return, fine. You should see the refund go to your original payment method. Don’t close the case merely upon a promise.
If seller wants item returned before refunding you, that’s fine also. Seller pays for return postage. You print the label. Item sent, tracking will confirm delivery, you’ll be refunded. Again, don’t close the case just on a promise.
Once you close a case, it can’t be reopened - so be careful.
If the seller plays games with you, offers partial refund, wants endless photos or videos or just doesn’t respond or follow through with return postage label, after 4 days the option to ask eBay to step in will appear. Escalate - eBay accepts refund request on behalf of seller, and you’ll be refunded.
All timeframes are absolutely strict to the mouse’s whisker of a second.
If it’s past 30 days of your receiving the item, you are no longer covered by the MBG.
If you paid by PayPal, though, you can open a refund request under PayPal Buyer Protection. That’s valid for up to 180 days from the transaction date.
If you didn’t pay through PayPal, you have one avenue remaining: a chargeback through bank/card issuer if your payment was funded by card. Check your card’s T&Cs for timeframe. A few might only have that protection for one month; more likely it will be 2, 3 or 4 months. The longest I’ve seen was 6 months. Every card issuer/bank has different dispute timeframes, and it varies also between different specific cards.
As long as the metal detector was not as described at the time of arrival, these forms of dispute can help. Bear in mind they are not product warranties; if the item failed after working properly, then you really need to have a product warranty. To be enforceable, you know the drill … Australian business, authorised by the manufacturer to sell that item.

Did you simply ask the seller for a refund?
Or did you actually open and follow through with an item not as described dispute?
Have you checked your funding source for the refund?
Did you buy as a guest or on this account?
What was the item number?
