·2 years agoI found this discussion after posting the same problem.
It comes down to the inadequate menus that ebay provide to contact them through the help desk.
The supplier is still listed with ebay so presumably ebay has some leverage over the supplier to get a solution if only it could be raised with them.
countessalmirena
·2 years agoUnprecedented in my experience doesn’t equate to “hasn’t happened to me”, but rather “I’ve not come across such an instance on eBay, either in person or to anyone else, anecdotally or otherwise.”
This is certainly an interesting scenario.
countessalmirena
·2 years agoI’m shocked because
• it’s unprecedented in my experience, and
• there is no such thing as a recall of an unbranded item sold by a Chinese seller or by an Australian seller on-selling or dropshipping electrical goods that haven’t been certified to Australian standards, unless the Australian seller of such an item wants to put itself under scrutiny for importing and selling such items (significant fines, possible imprisonment). No acknowledged manufacturer as there’s no branding, and it was churned out in China anyway so there won’t be any recall from the manufacturer. The only recall possible is by government order, and that means something serious has happened.
The item in question is still being sold on eBay by both Australian sellers and Chinese sellers. Why hasn’t eBay taken down those easily identified listings?
gutterpunkz05
·2 years agoI'm shocked because
I can not locate anything remotely similar, recalled in Australia or on EU Alerts, could not be bothered trudging through US.
sugar249
·2 years agoThis always makes me laugh, because it hasnt happened to you it must not happen at all.
It appears in OPS messages so it's not a scam, and it was sent by Ebay. So its real
sugar249
·2 years agoI am unclear why people are shocked that Ebay would alert buyers to potential recall on a product they had purchased thru the Ebay system.
Ebay is a responsible corporate citizen, and they do actually block you from listing recalled items, and if they have sufficient details in the Database about sales where a recall has being done, it is a simple DB query and the messages can easily be sent out to impacted buyers.
And I know you will all say that Ebay is not the seller, true, but they are a responsible platform, who will help out where possible.
springyzone
·2 years agoSo if ebay knows the buyer, then they would also know the seller & let them know and you'd think if rover gunn contacted ebay help, ebay should assist with a recalled item then.
I think it is important for rover to contact help, if only to find out if the notice is genuine because it seems strange to me that ebay would send out a recall notice for an item with no brand name, or not that I can see in the title anyway.
sugar249
·2 years agoRe Ebay assisting, they are only a listing platform and not the seller, they are being a good corporate citizen, and alerting the buyer, for all we know they may also have alerted the seller. The seller has the responsibility to resolve any recalls not Ebay.
Re your question is it a genuine notice, if you had bothered to read through the whole thread, OP says there was also a copy in their Ebay messages. So not a scam email
sandypebbles
·2 years agoYes, the OP did eventually say it was in their eBay messages
But only after accusing other members of 'targeting' and going on the attack' due to being asked if they were certain it was really from eBay and members explaining why there were concerns over such an 'unusual' message
And then they compared buying something from Coles to their buying an unbranded knock off from a seller in China
And the 'Australia law' quote that does not apply to sellers in China
Plus the recall cannot seem to be be found anywhere on the world wide webs thus far
I would not suggest any others who may face a similar experience just going ahead and doing whatever based on the OP saying there was a message in their eBay messages
Still many good reasons to advise to proceed with caution, I would think
springyzone
·2 years agoI read through the whole thread and yes I saw that OP says it was in ebay messages.
And okay I am cynical but I am still not 100% convinced it was from ebay, which is why I would be getting onto ebay help, if only to confirm ebay did in fact send that message.
And yes, it is the seller's responsibility to resolve any recalls. But I'll suggest this. If ebay sent a message to the seller about a recall (which you would definitely expect to be the case if they also sent messages to buyers) and a buyer contacts ebay to say a seller is not resolving the issue and if ebay can see the message-directing the buyer back to ebay help desk, no resolution-then maybe ebay needs, as a good corporate citizen, to immediately ban that seller from listing on ebay.

·2 years agoAs you've been made aware there is a problem with the item, if you continue to use it and it causes damage to the home, it's likely your home and contents insurance be voided.
countessalmirena
·2 years agoOP, it’s such a bizarre occurrence that I’d guess most eBay members reading here would have thought it must be a scam.
Now that you’ve explained it was also a message in your inbox, the authenticity of the message is established, but the bizarreness remains!
As said, why eBay would be contacting you about an item being “recalled” is in my experience unprecedented.
That they did so about an item that is unbranded - by definition without a stated brand or Australian manufacturer - is so weird that my brow is wrinkling and I’m discussing this with our cat Ichabod. He is meowing in astonishment (or else he just wants some further patting).
Your reference to items sold by Coles and your dismissal of “unbranded” as meaning things without a brand name stamped on them are not really relevant. Coles is, as said by others here, an Australian company and they are subject to ACL and of course for selling electrical / electronic items that are manufactured to Australian standards. If they sell something of that sort not to Australian standards, they’d be in a world of trouble.
Unbranded doesn’t mean no brand name showing on the item. It means it’s churned out in a (usually Chinese) factory, of the poorest cheapest quality raw materials, its components made to function minimally and without regard for safety, adequacy, capacity etc, items which have not been tested AS REQUIRED for the electrical regulatory standards. What you do when you order from a Chinese seller selling unbranded items is bypass that process, and you put yourself at risk.
From a previous post in another thread:
In another thread, I've explained why "made in China" under contract to a brand is completely different to "made in China" without any quality control, faking capability and quality and brand, with the components not even being fit for purpose.
Raw materials are actually the costliest aspect of manufacturing in China, which is why these factories that churn out unbranded/fake/fraudulent items will skimp on the raw materials for the components. The intention is to make something/sell something that looks - ON THE OUTSIDE - very much like the expensive name-brand quality items that are made under contract and must meet certain standards, but which are revealed as the cheap made-to-fail rubbish they are once you look "under the hood", or try to use the item to the capacity/function/etc which is stated. It may work for a while, but it will not work to the extent or for as long or to the acceptable safety standard that the genuine item which it's imitating will work... and it is a safety hazard. It's a risk. It's not worth it.
In yet another thread, I touch briefly on the Regulatory Compliance Mark. You must be aware of the RCM requirement. I'll quote a bit from that thread here as well:
“There are regulations that apply to the supply of electrical equipment and appliances. The requirements set out in the regulations must be followed. A failure to do so is a criminal offence.”
“Regulations and Standards apply to all electrical equipment sold or offered for supply in Australia. Certain types of equipment are classified as prescribed. These pieces of equipment must go through a certification process which ensures the equipment is compliant to the relevant safety standards before being offered for supply in Australia.”
“Regulatory Compliance Mark (RCM)
Prescribed electrical products must have an RCM on the appliance or an Australian approval number to show that the product has been certified.
This mark is currently recognised by all States and Territories of Australia.”
IN CONCLUSION
If eBay have contacted you directly about a router which you bought quite a while ago, what’s the chance that they are doing so because another buyer of the same item has had a catastrophic issue resulting from the use of that item? Fire, explosion, severe injury, death - and of course that buyer (or family) would have contacted eBay… and eBay, sort-of stuck in the middle with no legal responsibility but wanting to protect themselves as a result of the information, might well send out emails and messages warning buyers, using wording that really makes no sense but effectively washed their hands of the issue.
In other words, you’ve been warned. Continue using that router at own risk.

arctoph_49
·2 years agoLike other people, I seriously doubt the message is genuine, but if you want to be 100% sure, do what papermoon said.
And you bought the item a long time ago? Even more unlikely eBay would message you about an item you bought a long time ago.
papermoon.lady
·2 years agoMy very first thought was also that it is a scam.
If you want to be sure, check your messages in your eBay account (not your normal mailbox), as genuine eBay messages are also in your messages in your eBay account.
I have never heard of eBay contacting customers about recalled products - ever.
Maybe the scammer (if it is a scammer) saw your feedback in the seller's account (or the feedback the seller left for you), so they saw what you bought (it is not possible to see what you bought from your account, but it is usually possible from the seller's account, if the listings are not private or if you have not made your own feedback private).
Were there any links in the email you received? I hope you didn't click on them if there were links.

OP2 years agoHi it was in my ebay messages. The seller told me to contact the help desk. As i have stated I cannot contact them i just keep going back to the start.??

·2 years agoI'm actually shocked you got a message from ebay, given that I can't see the brand mentioned in the details you gave.
The seller is not going to help you. If you bought a long time ago, the 30 day ebay window is long past.
Most things on ebay from random sellers don't come with any guarantee either, no matter what an ad says.
Ebay is not going to help you. The only help they give is for recent purchases where things have gone wrong. They are not in the warranty business. So contacting them for help won't be a lot of use.
All you can do is as sugar said, contact the actual manufacturers if you know the brand. Look up the website. Google the item, see what information you can find.

·2 years agoI have to wonder if it was a legit eBay message at all
I mean, look at how many products have been recalled over the years, including ones that would have surely been sold by eBay sellers
I can't recall of ever hearing anyone else getting such a message
And surely if eBay did contact buyers of such an item, they would have also contacted the seller to inform them they had sold an item that has now been recalled ?
springyzone
·2 years agoI wondered exactly the same thing.
There are a lot of scams about, I know. Especially ones where they say you have bought something off ebay.
If this is a scam message though, it is a double worry as they seem to know the actual item rover gunn bought.
Probably time for him to update his passwords etc on ebay, just to be on the safe side.
Anonymous User
OP2 years agoHi no it is not a scam it was in my eBay messages and I have spoken to the seller they told me to contact HELP DESK. As I stated all i get is sent back to the start there is know way of contacting eBay about the recalled item?/
maryb0berry
·2 years agoFile a return request. Recalls are covered under the money back guarantee as recalled items are required to be refunded. If you got injured from the recall item it’s a lawsuit. All stores are required to refund for recalled items. I’ve even returned a 2 year old crib before because it was recalled even though I was no longer using it. The item can’t be sold, or resold by law. If I were to resell the crib instead of returning it, then if someone got injured, that’d be a lawsuit.
If the seller isn’t responding, file a return claim. Then eBay will step in when the seller doesn’t respond.
springyzone
·2 years agoI think we have gone full circle.
The problem for rover gunn is presumably he is not able to open a return request as it is well past the 30 day window. He purchased this a long time ago.
That was why he wanted to be able to get through to an ebay help desk in order to speak to a real person on ebay. He couldn't figure out how to get past the bots, from what I can make out.
The interesting thing in the message from ebay was that it said,
We’re reaching out to you because an item you purchased may have been recalled or pose a safety hazard.
If ebay had wanted to step in, it could have done so but it hasn't stopped sellers listing those items, from what others on here have reported.
My guess is that it isn't definite that this particular item is the same one that has been recalled.
Anonymous User
OP2 years agoHi all i seem to be getting is targeted by the members. by law if a product is recalled due to an electrical fault catches fire or can cause a person to be shocked. it comes back to the seller and the sellers supplier and it also falls back on eBay to make sure customers of eBay are contacted if an item has been sold through eBay. It is the same if you supplied an item to Coles and it was recalled for what ever reason you take it back to Coles and they in turn send the item back to the supplier.
All I am doing is asking a question so there is no need to be in an attacking mode.
sorry I asked.
gutterpunkz05
·2 years agoIt looks like the product was sold as unbranded.
I don't know how a recall notice could ever be issued for an unbranded product.
Anonymous User
OP2 years agoHi I have bought heaps of items unbranded on eBay they are either in a plastic bag or plain box. And lots of lights LED come with no brand name or makers some do have a bar code with numbers but no name.
padi*0409
·2 years agoOnly if that seller is registered in Australia, the majority of feedback left for you is from Chinese registered seller - so Australian laws do not apply to them.
springyzone
·2 years agoNo one here is trying to target you, but more trying to establish what happened.
In your original message, you said, " I received a message from eBay ".
So we didn't know exactly how you received that message-via email, ebay messages, phone message etc
Okay, now you have clarified it was actually in your ebay messages.
You can contact ebay help but you won't be able to phone them. In business hours, you can get ebay chat, which is where you type back & forth.
Click on where it says ebay help in blue at the top of the page. It should open a new tab for customer service.
Scroll down tto the very bottom. All the top parts will be links to information pages because basically, ebay doesn't want to chat to you if they can help it, but they will as a last resort.
You may have to choose a category. I am trying it out and clicked return an item for a refund.
A new page loads and on the left is an option to 'Chat with our automated assistant'.
Start that up. You'll have to persist. It will say that it will help you with your issue or connect you with an agent. This is what you want. So type in your question and if it asks you if it has solved it you have to keep saying no till a real person comes online. It may take a little while.
I personally don't know that this will get you the answers you are after. You need to find out what the issue is with the item & who you are supposed to return it to, since the seller is not co-operating.
You are right in that Australian stores such as Coles will sometimes issue a recall of products they have sold but the consumer laws for ebay purchases are a lot more murky.
Quite a few sellers on ebay are not registered businesses, quite a few sellers are located overseas.
Personally, if I received a message from ebay about a product that I had bought long ago, I'd be shocked. I was puzzled by the whole thing but after reading countess's summary, I suspect she may have pinpointed the reason. If ebay genuinely did send that message, then there is something seriously wrong with the product, it is highly dangerous, don't use it.
The only reason ebay would get involved is to cover their own backsides.
Good luck getting through and please let us know how you get on.
